◾Tanzania Prisons Services causes unnecessary confusion after 24-hour silence on his whereabouts

◾Treason charges against the main opposition leader in an election year, and disqualification of his party from the vote threaten to overshadow Tanzania's general election in October and tarnish the country’s image.

Tanzania's main opposition leader, Tundu Lissu, who is in jail over treason charges, has been transferred to a maximum security prison as he awaits hearing of his case, which carries the possibility of a death penalty.

Tanzania Prisons Services caused panic and confusion among Lissu's supporters, family, and lawyers by unnecessarily withholding information on his whereabouts since yesterday.

Lissu's party, CHADEMA, said in a statement today that the prisons department finally confirmed that the famous inmate was transferred from Keko to Ukonga prison.

Ukonga is a maximum security prison where inmates facing death row charges and sentences from serious offenses such as murder, terrorism and treason are held.

The notoriously overcrowded prison holds more than 3,000 inmates.
