Lira Trader Flees After Beans Allegedly Laced With Engine Oil

A trader in Lira City’s Produce Lane has fled after allegedly being caught with beans suspected to have been mixed with engine oil to artificially increase their weight and market value.

The trader, identified as Shadrack, was reportedly caught with the beans before abandoning the stock and fleeing the scene.

Produce Lane Grain Traders Chairperson Tom Etuku and local official Francis Ogema Awany confirmed the incident, raising concerns over the growing risk of adulterated food products entering the city’s markets.

Bazar Ward LC2 Chairperson Henry Kasule and Councillor Filla Ocen warned that chemically altered food could pose serious health risks to consumers, including long term exposure to substances that may contribute to illnesses such as cancer.

The officials called for tighter monitoring of food sold in markets and stronger action against traders who deliberately alter produce for financial gain.

Lira City Health Inspector Chris Eritot has instructed market executives to work closely with city enforcement officers to ensure the matter is investigated and that any trader found responsible is prosecuted.

The incident has renewed concerns about food safety and the need for stronger checks along the food supply chain to prevent contaminated or adulterated produce from reaching consumers.
