Currency Comparison Wars: The Most Useless Olympics in East Africa.

The lamest debate I keep seeing on this wall is when a Kenyan proudly says:

"Our shilling is stronger than Uganda’s or Tanzania’s... we’re doing better!"

Please. Relax, economist wa Facebook.

Let’s unpack this foolishness real quick:

If currency strength meant a country is richer or better off, then:

Kuwait would be running the world,

Zimbabwe would be buried at the bottom of the ocean, and

Iran, with its “weak” currency, wouldn’t be shaking global politics.

Meanwhile, Indonesia — whose currency is chilling way below Uganda’s — would be invisible.
But guess what? It’s one of Asia’s biggest economies.

So before you start flexing exchange rates like they’re your Form four results, ask yourself:

Do people have jobs?

Can they afford healthcare, food, and housing?

Are roads, schools, and industries growing?

Can people dream and actually achieve something?

That’s what development looks like. Not just a “stronger” shilling.

East Africa isn’t in a boxing ring — we’re in this together. 💪🏽🇰🇪🇺🇬🇹🇿

Educate yourself. Don’t let pride block common sense.
