The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has introduced a simplified three-step process for salaried Kenyans to file their annual income tax returns, in a move aimed at making compliance faster and more user-friendly.

The new system, available on the iTax platform, targets individuals whose only source of income is employment. It replaces the previously complex process that required manual data entry and Excel sheets.

How the New System Works
Under the updated approach, filing returns has been reduced to three key steps:
  • Log in to iTax using your PIN or National ID
  • Select “Employment Income Only” returns
  • Review, confirm, and submit pre-filled details
The system automatically populates key information such as:
  • Employment income
  • Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax deductions
  • Personal details
Taxpayers are only required to verify the information and indicate any applicable reliefs, such as insurance or mortgage deductions.

KRA says the simplified process is designed to:
  • Reduce errors caused by manual entry
  • Save time for taxpayers
  • Encourage early and accurate filing
The move is part of broader reforms to modernize tax administration and improve service delivery.

The new system mainly benefits:
  • Employees with a single source of income
  • Individuals relying on PAYE deductions
Those with additional income streams, such as business or freelance work, will still be required to follow a more detailed filing process.
