Police in Luuka District have arrested a 21-year-old man following the suspected double murder of two women at Bugobi Village, Nawanyago Parish in Irongo Sub-county.
The deceased have been identified as Betty Tulina, 58, and Esther Mubeezi, 32, both residents of the area. The two women reportedly lived at the same homestead as the suspect, who is a close family member.
Busoga North Regional Police spokesperson Samson Lubega said another family member visited the home on the afternoon of September 7 and found the suspect there, but could not establish the whereabouts of the two women.
Further inquiries led to the discovery of the women inside the family residence in circumstances that raised suspicion of foul play. Police were notified and arrested the suspect as investigations began to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and his alleged involvement.
Police have appealed for calm following reports of anger among residents, urging the community to avoid mob justice, destruction of property and any actions that could interfere with investigations.
The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to be taken to court once investigations are complete.
Domestic violence murders on the rise
The incident comes amid an increase in murders linked to domestic violence in Uganda.
According to the Police Annual Crime Report 2025, police recorded 208 domestic violence-related murder cases in 2025, up from 183 cases in 2024—a 13.7% increase.
The 208 victims included 89 adult men, 92 adult women, 14 male juveniles and 13 female juveniles.
North Kyoga recorded the highest number of such murders with 28 cases, followed by Rwizi with 19, Rwenzori West with 16 and Aswa East with 15.
At district and divisional level, Mubende, Kyenjojo and Oyam recorded the highest numbers, with 10 cases each. Kayunga recorded eight, Isingiro seven, while Bugiri, Kisoro, Nakaseke and Buhweju each recorded six.
