English speaking twilight girls cause
New-Year mayhem
Kenyan prostitutes invade local market
by Staff Reporter
Arusha town ushered into the New Year 2008 with local sex workers locked in a scuffle with their visiting Kenyan counterparts, each side fighting for potential foreign customers.
A brawl which erupted in the night of December 31 of 2007 and lasted several hours into the early hours of January 1 occurred in Kaloleni area, where the sex trade has been rampant especially during holidays.
Kaloleni and Levolosi the two central wards of the municipality have some of the infamous red zones where twilight girls roam freely targeting visitors especially tourists.
Eyewitnesses told the Arusha Times that the local commercial sex workers felt the pinch after what was described as ‘loosing out' against alien twilight ladies from Kenya who managed to lure foreign ‘customers' due to their ability to speak English.
The local players, apparently, were hindered by the communication barrier.
"The fight erupted when the aggressive Kenyan prostitutes proved more attractive to foreign tourists because they can speak fluent English unlike locals," an eyewitness maintained.
As it happened, local prostitutes resolved to forge a united front in a bid to kick-out their Kenyan counterparts and retain their territory.
What followed was the ‘new-year battle which broke out near Mrina Annex Bar and which spread as fast as bushfire in the entire Kaloleni hot spots.
Speaking to reporters one of the local girls who preferred anonymity said Kenyan prostitutes had no rights to invade their area because they also normally get ousted out once they try to venture across the border.
"We want them to go back to their country, if they are fleeing violence then let them behave when they are here. They have no right to interfere with our business they are simply refugees," she insisted.
Seif Jafari a resident of Kaloleni and stern religious person lamented what he called "general moral decadence", complaining that prostitution, which used to be frowned upon by the local communities, was now being tolerated.
Investigations conducted around the red ‘hot spots' revealed that on average, a girl can make up Tsh. 40, 000 in one night at the peak of the tourism season.
Kaloleni, a Swahili settlement in existence since the 1950s, is one of the oldest smart areas in Arusha town in those days. Arusha is clearly experiencing a tourist boom, primarily due to its spectacular wildlife in northern circuit that comprise, Manyara, Arusha, Tarangire, Serengeti National parks and Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
