M-Pesa services were on Saturday evening disrupted countrywide.

This caused great disappointment to thousands of Kenyans who rely on the ‘phone wallet’ for their daily transactions.

In a statement Safaricom explained that the outage was caused by database degradation and engineers were working to store service.

“We regret to notify our customers and partners that M-Pesa services are currently unavailable due to a database degradation leading to loss of the service,” read part of the statement.

As of 11:59PM on Saturday, M-Pesa was still down.

However, Safaricom apologised for the inconvenience, saying there will be an update as soon as the service is available again.

Ministry of ICT launches investigation into M- Pesa service outage

ICT Cabinet Secretary Mr. Joe Mucheru has asked Communications Authority and Central Bank of Kenya to probe recent M-Pesa services outage.

Safaricom customers were on Saturday left stranded after the company developed a technical hitch in its servers.

The company sent an apology to its customers after the problem persisted for over five hours.

In a statement on Sunday, Mucheru said the two bodies should give a comprehensive report detailing remedial measures that Safaricom can take to prevent future outages.

The ministry has appealed to the subscribers to have extra platforms so that such occurrence may not affect their transactions in the future.

Services were disrupted countrywide following the glitch that affected voice calls, SMS, and internet connectivity.
