Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete has promised that the government will shift to Dodoma within the next five years upon his re-election.
Addressing a rally on Monday in Dodoma, the designated capital of the east African country, Kikwete outlined several projects expected to be executed upon his re-election, which include construction of a new State House and an international airport by 2015, the local media reported on Tuesday.
The Tanzanian president said that the ruling Revolutionary Party of Tanzania Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) looks forward to ensuring that construction of the University of Dodoma is completed in the next five years.
He said that upon completion, the university will have capacity to take in a total of 40,000 students. At the moment the university has 15,000 students.
He also said that by 2015 all regions will be connected by tarmac roads.
In 1973, plans were made to move the Tanzania capital to Dodoma from Dar es Salaam. Tanzania's National Assembly moved there in February 1996, but many government offices remain in Dar es Salaam.
As the only CCM presidential candidate for Tanzania, Kikwete is expected to win his second presidential term.
On Late Sunday, the CCM National Congress chose former Zanzibar Chief minister Mohamed Gharib Bilal as the running mate for Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete in the general elections on Oct. 31.
