We ate and drank to celebrate the birth of the Nazarene, and learnt nothing

By Jenerali Ulimwengu

The week of extraordinary merrymaking is coming to its end, leaving behind battered bodies and soggy minds from too much self-indulgence.

As happens every year, individuals, groups and families have been paying excessive tribute to Bacchus — Greek god of wine and fertility — by irrigating their long necks and stuffing their bellies with unwanted ballast.

At the end of the bacchanalian revelry, those who, to corrupt Shakespeare, will drink as long as there is wine in Africa and a passage in their throats, must now wake up to the grim realities that have not been impressed by all the brouhaha about a Happy New Year, as what is revealed to them is just another brand-new second-hand year.

It’s not my intention to dampen anyone’s spirits, but my job is not to peddle pipedreams and Panglossian notions that seek to find blood in cacti and money that sprouts from tree branches because all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds.

No, I seek to tell like it is, and how it is as we face another January I do not like. We have been feting each other to mark the birth of the great Nazarene teacher, but few of us seem to have internalised his teachings.

For instance, when he said something to the effect that those who already have will have more added unto them while those who have nothing will have even that taken from them, he was not prescribing, only describing what he was seeing.

The way we treat our fellow human beings suggests that we believe he said, “Do unto others and run” and “It will be harder for a VW beetle to drive on a four-lane highway than for a poor man to enter the kingdom of heaven.”

It comes as little wonder to me, therefore, that the most religious individuals I know are also the most corrupt, venal and debauched.

I say this in earnest because all around I see thieving scoundrels, commercial and political Shylocks, men and women with inordinate appetites and sharp elbows, go before their god and sing themselves hoarse while throwing at him a few crumbs from their weekly booty, looking to cheat even He.

That they can hope to blindside someone they themselves have dubbed omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent really beats comprehension.

They have thus spawned cloaked entrepreneurs, men and women of the cloth you would not dare trust with your poodle, who preach the gospel of wealth on earth and who demonstrate the truth of their word by parading around in big, posh cars they bought with the money their congregations gave them. Fiction is hardly stranger than that.

On the other hand, we are called upon to deal with the threat of confessional intolerance such as we have seen in our East African countries and elsewhere on the continent, a phenomenon that is beginning to dog Tanzania even as our rulers continue to talk so glibly about “peace and tranquillity.”

Recently a joint communiqué issued by a college of Christian churches raised their concerns over threats made against them by purported Muslims, in addition to acts of violence, vandalism and arson meted out to churches and churchmen, one of whom was shot in Zanzibar this last week even as we celebrated the season of goodwill.

These would have been grave in any situation in any country, but they announce themselves gravest in a setting where a lackadaisical style of government has taken hold and where urgent matters can wait.

It’s not as if we did not have real issues to grapple with. Poverty is deepening and widening; the gulf between the haves and have-nots is widening dangerously; unemployment is rising and the youth are restless; the moribund education system is breathing its last and a sense of drift pervades all sectors.

This is a pile of tinder under which a match has been struck; religious bigotry will supply the fuel.

So, am I depressing you? Try to have a Happy New Year.

Da! Kwa hiki kiingereza kibovu (samahani maana nimekasika kukisoma) ni bora uandike kwa Kiswahili!? Sifa za nini? Au ndio jitihada za kutaka kuonekana nshomile! Aaaah!:becky:

Jenerali Ulimwengu writes in an extremely readabde manner. But he occasionaly sacrifices content in favor of style. What does he mean here when he says that the most religious people that he knows are prolific sinners? In what way are they very religious if they are outstanding sinners?

Good to see you caught that too - more style over substance.

If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bs. :becky:[h=1][/h]

Augustine Moshi

This is a satirical dig at the pretenders pious and modern day Pharisees, for example those who would have you believe that they are bishop so and so, only to find out they are using religious privileges to sell drugs, or sheikh so and so, only to find out they are in the payroll of some dubious characters to plant seeds of divisiveness in the country.

I have contributed to a thread here in JF in which a couple of chaps advocated a stepfather to not take care of his stepchildren, on religious grounds ( one Catholic Christian nonetheless, the supposed reign of Catholic compassion and the love of the underprivileged notwithstanding). What irony for the godless atheist - myself- to advocate for love and family togetherness and the god fearing Catholic to throw away support for the child even before knowing the details of the situation. It reminded me of that story where the mentioned Nazarene redefined "Who is your neighbor" to a questioning Pharisee in the parable of the good Samaritan ( Lk 10:25-37 ).

The underlying point I am taking here is that religion has increasingly been turned into a fad, a source of income, a con. Not that it hasn't always been this way, all the ancient kingdoms inoculated themselves against rebellions by invoking some sort of religious and divine right, it's more rampant now as people realize how unreal it is, even as even more are still adherent to it's shackles. So now you have a situation by which not only the Akihitos and Windsors of this world use this con, but every Dick, Harry, Pat Robinson, T B Joshua, T.D Jakes, Kakobe not to mention Sheikh Ponda or even some funnier lesser characters could cut their niche and join in on the action!

There is an economy of words used that would offend the dying breed of scrupulous and spartan religious people, but you can't even fault him (Ulimwengu) for not specifying explicitly that what he means is "those who falsely cultivate the appearance of being religious" rather that "those who are truly religious" because the whole "religious" thing is so murky and open to interpretation to the point of being meaningless.

For every "Haraka haraka haina baraka" you can find in the bible, there is an equally valid and opposite "Ngoja ngoja yaumiza matumbo". Rendering the book open to the manipulation of any charismatic conman.

So before going at Ulimwengu for not clarifying what he meant, seeing a contradiction that he would label the same people "very religious" and at the same time "prolific sinners" you need to define who is religious.

Perhaps their greatest sin is in being "religious" in a world where "religion" is a con, an opiate for the masses. So that the usurpers and pretenders could ride their tax free limousines and ship drugs with religious license.

I find it difficult to identify the intended audience of Jenerali's article!

He wrote in "The East African".

The audience is obviously those who do not have a problem with basic English. Some here would have you believe the piece is in dumbfounding Dickensian diction spruced with chuckles of Churchillian churlish for the churches coupled with a sprinkle of vivid Victorian valedictory.

The other side of the same coin has the Pharisees he was lambasting on it. The biggest and most important ones do read "The East African" and would have no problem understanding.

Trouble is you have some Shigongo crew up in here trying to read this piece without even knowing what "Shylock" is.

Of course they won't understand.
