NAIROBI (Reuters) - Ethiopia’s prime minister said his landlocked nation of 100 million people will begin using the port of neighboring Eritrea, its longtime sworn enemy, after a day of historic talks with President Isaias Afkwerki.
“Ethiopia will resume using Eriteria’s port,” Abiy said in remarks broadcast by both nations’ state broadcasters while the prime minister was attending a state dinner hosted by Isaias.

Were Ethiopians using Mombasa port for their imports ?what are we to loose? I dont get it.

Na jina la LAPSSET mtabadilisha???

Kwanini?
Objective ya Lapsset ni kufungua biashara kati ya Kenya, Ethiopia na South Sudan.
Pipeline, roads, rail, port, airports etc.

Actually, pieces are now falling into place.
1. Ethiopia is now more democratic. Meaning it's likely they'll soon open up their market.
2. Ethiopia is at peace with its neighbors. Meaning a larger market opens up for Kenya.
3. South Sudan is almost signing a peace treaty.

Ethiopia being Democratic or not has nothing to do with opening up their market, countries opened their markets for variety of reasons.

All those countries you mentioned they used to have their own traditional trading partners before Kenya sneak in and tried to steal other people's business. But the direction of wind is changing very quickly, South Sudan is going back to their big brother Sudan, Ethiopia is going back to their little brother Eritrea. Where does this leave Kenya only God knows.

Mafala hawaelewi kwamba lamu port inajengwa because of kenyans. Its a project that will open up nothern kenya..lakini nyinyi wajinga wa bongolala hamuoni hayo...rudi shule

Who gave Tz small brains?? So lapsset was purely for export and import??..

You guys should seek brains.

massawa port Eritrea has 6 berths, of the six berths, only one has a length of over 200m and a depth of 12meters, the second one has a depth of 8.7m.... its total capacity is 4 million tonnes p.a
Massawa Port Authority - Berths and Harbours

Port Sudan has a Capacity of 13 million tonnes but handles a throughput of 17 million tonnes, its so overcongested that the average waiting time is 21 Days!

in comparizon Mombasa port dwell time is 3 days and has a depth of 15 meters in all its major berths...

Othe other side of Kenya.. Lamu port will be able to recieve vessels that no other port of this region can handle (not even Mombasa) Lamu port berths will have a quey legth of 400m and a depth of 18 meters! Who will compete with Lamu? it will virtually have no delay since it will be a new port and the road wont have traffic

Ha haa! Kenya walijivuna sana. Kuwa wakati wao wanafikisha TEU 1.5 M sie Dsm port tuko kwenye TEU .5M.
Sasa Ethiopia wakijitoa, Kenya watarudi kwenye TEU .3M za makontena.
The dooms day for Kenya is now here!

Don't fool yourself with Eritrea facilities, Ethiopia have been investing in all countries they see economical benefit to them, they've done that with Djibouti, they are doing with Somaliland, and now they're going to Eritrea. Ethiopian Airline have announce today that they're starting daily flights to Eritrea very soon.

Investing how much???? the combined investment Ethiopia will make in those ports will be less than $50m-100m... they will never seriously invest in any port that doesnt aready have everything in place.... If they were really going to invest they would have done that with Djibouti port where they aready have SGR and road connection. ...

My friend, Kenya should start focusing on other things and forget about Ethiopia. They're busy crafting their own future.

Somalia, Ethiopia to jointly invest in four seaports on the Red Sea
