The Iteso Cultural Union (ICU) has called for a direct dialogue with President Museveni regarding the ongoing legal and political predicament of former Speaker of Parliament, Annet Anita Among.
The appeal was made by the Emorimor, Paul Sande Emolot, the paramount chief of the Iteso, following a visit to the embattled ex-speaker at her residence in Nakasero, Kampala.
Ms Among, who hails from the Teso sub-region, is reportedly under intense state investigation over allegations of corruption and abuse of office.
In a statement issued through his Prime Minister, the Emorimor urged the state to handle the matter with sensitivity, specifically requesting that special consideration be given to the health and well-being of the former Speaker.
The cultural leader further demanded that state agencies expedite the investigations to ensure a timely, fair, and conclusive resolution of the matter.
"We urge that the process remains transparent, fair, and strictly guided by the principles of justice and the rule of law," Mr Emolot stated.
The Emorimor also pleaded for leniency regarding Ms Among's current confinement, asking the state to grant her more breathing room.
"Where circumstances permit and in accordance with the law, consideration should be given to measures that allow our daughter greater freedom and dignity as she awaits the conclusion of the ongoing process," the paramount chief added.
Despite the tension surrounding the high-profile corruption probe, Mr Emolot expressed gratitude to President Museveni for permitting the cultural leadership to visit Ms Among at her home. He described the gesture as a sign of the government's commitment to fairness.
"We thank the President for granting us access to visit our daughter at her home in Nakasero. This gesture shows the government's commitment to justice and fairness in this ongoing matter," he said.
Ms Among’s tenure as Speaker was heavily shadowed by domestic and international scrutiny, culminating in sanctions by foreign governments and subsequent local investigations into iron sheets procurement and parliamentary accountability anomalies.
The ICU’s intervention highlights the growing political and cultural undertones surrounding her legal woes, as Teso leaders rally behind one of their most prominent political figures.
