Elders from the Teso sub-region have appealed to President Yoweri Museveni to ensure fairness in the ongoing investigations involving former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, warning against political influence and public judgment before the investigations are concluded.
In a statement issued on May 28 under the banner of the Iteso Cultural Union (ICU), the elders said they support accountability and the work of state institutions but expressed concern over what they described as increasing political pressure surrounding the investigations. They urged investigators to uphold the rule of law, transparency, and the constitutional principle of innocence until proven guilty.
The statement was signed by Mr. Alloch William Akoll, a senior advisor on ICU affairs. He emphasized that while government agencies have a mandate to investigate allegations, the process should be conducted fairly and professionally without prejudice.
The elders also called on President Museveni to handle the matter with impartiality and statesmanship, saying national leaders should focus on dialogue, consensus, and respect for regional representation while addressing political disagreements.
Their intervention comes as state agencies continue investigations into allegations of corruption, illicit enrichment, and abuse of office involving Anita Among. The elders questioned reports of actions taken against her before the investigations are complete, including the freezing of assets, restrictions on movement, and what they termed political isolation. They argued that such measures could create public bias and affect confidence in the investigation process.
Since May, joint security teams comprising officers from the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), anti-corruption agencies, and the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) have reportedly carried out searches at properties linked to Among in Kampala, Wakiso, and Bukedea districts. During the operations, several luxury vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce Cullinan, a Mercedes-Maybach, and a Range Rover, were seized.

The Teso elders said they remain committed to peaceful engagement with state institutions and are ready to support dialogue aimed at ensuring justice while avoiding political tensions. They also highlighted Among’s contributions to development projects in Teso, citing donations of medical equipment to Bukedea Health Centre IV and tractors to farmers in Bukedea District during her tenure as Speaker.
In their concluding remarks, the elders pledged solidarity with Anita Among while maintaining support for lawful investigations, saying they want a peaceful, just, and equitable Uganda where leaders from all regions are treated with fairness and respect.
