Picha hii ina kila dalili ya KUPIKWA. Bahati mbaya, imeletwa humu jamvini kabla haijaiva. Wajanja tumeiona.
WHEN he closes his eyes, Jonathan Hone Ahpene relives the moment he says will haunt him for the rest of his life. Mr Ahpene, 33, has told of his terror the day he lost his baby daughter, Moetu Kikorangi Ahpene, at a house fire at The Narrows.
She just said Dad, Dad, Dad.
She must have been able to see me. I didnt, couldnt, find her, he said.
I can still see it when I close my eyes. In my dreams I can get out of it. In reality I couldnt. Theres no reason she passed away.
Mr Ahpene was downstairs last month when he heard the screams from the floor above.
He saved his other children Hineamaru, 6, LeBron, 4, Carmelo, 3, and Sonny, 2 by ripping off four louvres in the kitchen with his burnt hands and pushing them out.
The smoke was just above their heads, he said. The fire was like a barrier across the room. I didnt realise the baby girl was in the room.
He told the children to get to the back door, but didnt realise it was locked.
I pulled four louvres out the pain was ridiculous. Ive never felt pain like it.
I lifted them through the louvres one-by-one, he said. I watched the kids run out. I was hysterical, screaming at people to help me.
Panic set in when he realised one-year-old Moetu was still inside. He ran back into the room three times but was unable to breathe and started to panic.
After getting the kids out I couldnt find my baby girl and I was at the front door screaming to get help.
I started to feel around the bed for my daughter and I got singed. I couldnt see anything but I felt sparks flaring out of the mattress. I was really starting to lose the plot then. Really starting to fear for my baby girls chances then.
Mr Ahpene said his eldest daughter started the fire playing with a cigarette lighter.
I dont smoke anymore, but shes a very smart girl. Shes going through a firebug stage. Shes troubled. Shes getting counselling as well.
She understands she lit the fire that killed her baby sister. She cries too. Im on the phone every day.
All I can do is up my game and make sure there is not the remotest chance anything like this can happen again.
Mr Ahpene is in rehab, and has had 67 internal stitches and dozens of staples for a bowel adhesion as a result of the fire. His torso and arms have burns all over.
The childrens mother, Desphina, was at relatives place while the fire broke out.
The family has been split in the meantime. It destroyed me, he said. She probably couldve crawled out if she knew but she was probably just amazed by the fire.
I did my best but I failed. Thats what Ive to live with for the rest of my life.
