NBA.com: Thabeet of a Different Drum

NEW YORK - The towering Hasheem Thabeet pays homage to his African heritage every night he gears up for action with the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Tanzanian native often shows up to arenas on gameday in traditional African clothing -- but it's the orange-dyed patch in his afro that often gets the most questions.

At 7-foot-3, he's currently the tallest player in the NBA and speaks with a warm and bellowing boom in his voice. Perched on a locker room bench before the team's recent game against the New York Knicks, he explained to NBA Africa the dyed patch in his hair is meant to honor the elders in the Tanzanian town where he grew up.

"I'm from a city called Tabora and the knights from my tribe used to dye it like that," he said. "I'm a product of them. Everybody nowadays makes their own choices on how they embrace their culture. This is my way." Thabeet said, however, he doesn't like talking about his hair patch because he isn't trying to do it for praise or recognition.

When it comes to his heritage, Thabeet prefers to talk more about how thankful he is for the growing amount of support he gets back home. "It's a blessing every time I go back home," he said with a smile. "Especially my family, because they've been a big part of my career and have always been there for me.

" Thabeet returned to Tanzania over the summer, teaming up with NBA Africa for the Sprite NBA Development Camp. Alongside Chicago Bulls forward and two-time NBA All-Star Luol Deng, the pair ran basketball clinics for local youth. Thabeet said he was taken aback by the level of excitement the kids had during the clinics, which energized him with thoughts about how much the sport is growing across the continent.

"Whenever I do clinics, I get a lot of kids," Thabeet said. "The level of talent in Africa is not there yet. For the sport to grow, it's going to take a while. But with all the excitement we have now, I believe in the future we're going to have a lot more players in the league."

Thabeet is one of many Oklahoma City Thunder players that have traveled to the region for clinics. Teammates Nick Collison and Thabo Sefolosha headed to Africa for Basketball Without Borders in the offseason, and Kevin Durant and Congo native Serge Ibaka
recently pledged to head there this summer.
