Gunfire heard at DR Congo state TV

Gunfire has been heard at the headquarters of the Democratic Republic of Congo's state TV and radio in the capital, Kinshasa.
According to the Reuters news agency, RTNC's channels subsequently went off the air.
Youths armed with machetes and guns have taken reporters hostage, a police spokesman has told the AFP news agency.
There are also reports on social media of gunfire from a military compound and airport in the city.

Gunmen have opened fire on the international airport in the Democratic Republic of Congo and seized control of the state television station in the capital. The multiple attacks on Monday saw armed men take reporters hostage and fire shots at the airport, which is on the outskirts of Kinshasa. Before transmission was shut down at RTNC, two gunmen appeared on camera to deliver what appeared to be a political message against President Joseph Kabila's government. "Gideon Mukungubila has come to free you from the slavery of the Rwandan," said the message, according to a Reuters reporter who saw a tape of the transmission.
In central Kinshasa, the streets emptied and shopkeepers closed their shutters.
"They are armed with machetes and guns. They have taken reporters hostage. An operation is under way to dislodge them," police spokesman colonel Mwana Mputu told the news agency AFP.
A customs official at the international airport on the outskirts of Kinshasa reported heavy gunfire there just minutes after the attack on state television.
"Shooting has started here," the official told Reuters.
"They are shooting everywhere. We are all hiding."
It is not clear if the two attacks are linked.

KINSHASA, Dec 30 – Heavy gunfire erupted in
several areas of the Congolese capital
Kinshasa on Monday, including the
international airport and the military
headquarters, causing panic among residents.
Police also said amed youths had taken
hostage several reporters from the state
television station RTNC in Kinshasa.
“There’s panic in the city, people are asking what
is happening,” a local resident told AFP, adding
that he had seen police and military officers
deploy around the RTNC building and the nearby
Congolese parliament.
Shooting was heard near the Tshatshi military
camp as well as the international airport at Ndjili,
residents and a local journalist said.
A police spokesman said earlier that journalists at
RTNC had been taken hostage by armed youths,
and the television feed had been cut.
“They are armed with machetes and guns. They
have taken reporters hostage. An operation is
under way to dislodge them,” spokesman colonel
Mwana Mputu told AFP.
Before the station’s television feed was cut, two
young presenters were seen on screen,
appearing frightened but calm, with a young
man standing behind them seemingly
threatening them.
