Gambia has announced that it will ban female genital mutilation, or FGM, as a global campaign to end the practice takes effect.
Last week, President Yahya Jammeh said FGM was outlawed immediately, but gave no specific timeline for the government to draft legislation enforcing the ban.
More than 130 million women worldwide are subjected to the procedure. According to the UK newspaper,
The Guardian, three-quarters of females in Gambia have experienced FGM. More than half of the female children in the country were subjected to the procedure by the age of 14.
