Security agencies have arrested four men in Lira City after dismantling another suspected counterfeit currency operation and recovering fake Uganda shilling notes along with materials believed to have been used to produce forged money.
The intelligence led operation was carried out jointly by the Uganda Police Force and the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) on July 11, 2026, at Agenda 501 Hotel in Ireda Agali Cell, Lira City East Division.
According to North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson Patrick Jimmy Okema, officers recovered suspected counterfeit Uganda shilling notes worth Shs3 million, all in Shs50,000 denominations, as well as chemicals and other materials believed to have been intended for making fake currency.
Police have opened a case of suspected possession of counterfeit currency, while the recovered notes and materials will be sent to the Bank of Uganda Currency Centre in Lira for forensic examination to determine whether they are genuine or counterfeit.
The latest arrests come just two weeks after security agencies uncovered what is believed to be one of northern Uganda's largest suspected counterfeit currency syndicates, where fake US dollar notes with a purported face value of $9 million (about Shs33.75 billion) were recovered and submitted to the Bank of Uganda for analysis.
Police have warned the public against manufacturing, possessing or circulating counterfeit money, saying the offences are serious crimes that threaten the country's financial system. Investigations are ongoing.
