We are delighted to be announcing the acquisition of Lonrho Aviations Fly540 business with its unique platform of hubs, fly rights and growing passenger revenue base. The combined talents of Rubicons management team and our partners from Lonrho and Sir Stelios easyGroup will transform Fly540, already a growing and successful business, into Fastjet, a low cost, point-to-point, no frills all jet airline for Africa.
Ed Winter, consultant to Rubicon and intended Chief Executive Officer of Rubicon following Completion said:
The African aviation market is significantly under-served and there are major opportunities for growth in the aviation industry across Africa where current offerings are, with a few exceptions, sub-standard compared to international norms. With rising GDP and consumer spending, and changing demographics, Africa is ripe for a democratisation of air travel. We plan to achieve that through the launch of Fastjet, the first true pan-African low cost airline operating to European standards of safety security and quality. Wapi AIR Tanzania? What are plans ahead?
On 6 August we announced the change of the Companys name to FastJet Plc, reflecting our focus on the launch of FastJet branded services in Africa. The trading symbol for FastJet stock on the London Stock Exchange is now FJET.
On 24 July the Company announced the completion of a £5.5 million placing of shares to assist in the funding of the launch of FastJet. We also announced we had entered into a £5 million equity financing facility, providing flexibility to raise additional equity over time as required.
On 13 June 2012 we announced the acquisition, subject to shareholder approval, of Lonrho Aviation, the African airline operating under the Fly540 brand owned by Lonrho Plc. CLICK HERE for the announcement. For further information on Fly540 please visit www.fly540.com and www.fly540africa.com. A general meeting of shareholders was held on 29 June 2012 to vote on resolutions related to the acquisition, and it was announced on 2July 2012 that the acquisition had been completed. On the same day the Company announced the appointment of Ed Winter as Chief Executive Officer.
