Uganda is expected to hold its general election on January 15, 2026. According to Article 61(2) of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, the Electoral Commission designated this date for the Elections of the President and Members of Parliament (both directly elected MPs and District Woman Representatives).

On September 23 and 24, 2025 the Electoral Commission conducted the presidential nominations at the EC grounds in Lweza–Lubowa, Wakiso District. Among the nominated candidates, incumbent President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni (NRM) and Kyagulanyi Robert Ssentamu (NUP), popularly known as Bobi Wine, are considered the major contenders.

The Claim

A video clip has been circulating online showing U.S. President Donald Trump saying that “Bobi Wine is his friend” and that he will support him in the upcoming general election scheduled for January 2025.

Verdict: Misleading

JamiiCheck reviewed the video and identified a headline reading “President Trump meets with NYC Mayor-elect Mamdani,” along with the ABC News logo. A keywords search of that headline led to the original video published by ABC News, which includes the caption:

“After months of criticism, President Trump praised Mamdani in the Oval Office, saying they agree more than expected.”

Zohran Mamdani, a Ugandan-born Democrat, won New York City’s mayoral race against former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent.

The video showing Trump mentioning Bobi Wine has been digitally manipulated to mislead. An analysis using the content-detection tool Deepware, which detects AI-generated material, confirmed that the video was created using deepfake technology.
