The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested Embakasi East Member of County Assembly (MCA) Patrick Karani alongside two other suspects following the recovery of an illegally held firearm during a police operation in Nairobi.
According to the DCI, detectives raided the MCA's office in the Roasters area after receiving intelligence that led them to investigate the possession of a firearm. During the operation, officers recovered a Glock pistol and a magazine loaded with 12 rounds of 9mm ammunition, which were seized as evidence. Preliminary investigations revealed that the firearm was allegedly being held without a valid licence, an offence under Kenyan law.
The three suspects were immediately taken into custody and are expected to be arraigned in court once investigations and documentation procedures are completed. The DCI stated that inquiries into the matter are still ongoing and that additional details will be released as investigations progress.
The arrests come amid heightened scrutiny of political leaders facing legal investigations across the country. Hours earlier, Kuresoi North MP Alfred Mutai was detained at Nakuru Central Police Station after presenting himself to detectives probing violent clashes that disrupted a youth empowerment programme in Kuresoi North last week. The incident reportedly left three people nursing gunshot wounds.
Meanwhile, the Senate Committee on National Security has ordered the arrest of Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika after she repeatedly failed to honour summonses regarding investigations into the Lake Nakuru killings linked to Brian Odhiambo and allegations of fish contamination caused by heavy metals and raw sewage. The committee's decision followed several missed appearances by the governor despite repeated requests for her attendance.
