A proposed reform that would have given the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) sweeping powers to freeze bank accounts and seize assets has sparked intense debate in Parliament and among the public. The measures were aimed at strengthening tax enforcement against suspected non-compliant taxpayers.

Supporters of stronger enforcement argue that such powers would improve revenue collection and reduce tax evasion, ensuring that all individuals and businesses meet their obligations to the state. They maintain that efficient enforcement is critical at a time when the government is seeking to raise additional revenue to fund national priorities.

However, critics raised concerns that granting such authority without strict safeguards could lead to abuse and unfair treatment of taxpayers. They warned that aggressive enforcement mechanisms could harm businesses and ordinary citizens, ultimately undermining confidence in the country’s tax system.
