Nigeria won the first gold medal of the Games thanks to Augustina Nkem Nwaokolo's victory in the women's 48kg weightlifting class.

Kampala — MOSES Kipsiro finally gave Uganda something to smile about by winning a gold medal in the 5000 metres at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India.
Kipsiro, 24, shook off a stiff challenge in the final 100m from Beijing Olympics silver medalist Eliud Kipchoge to finish in 13 minutes 31.25 seconds at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
He will be out to become the first Ugandan to win two medals at the same games when he returns for the 10000m final on Monday.

"I wanted this badly, badly, badly and God has given me the gift," said Kipsiro.
"Kipchoge attacked me with 300m to go, 200m to go and again in the last 100m. I just didn't want him to pass me."
"I knew that I was the lone Ugandan in the race and my plan was to go all out so that they don't dictate the pace. It worked for me," said Kipsiro.
"I have been looking forward for gold and praying for it. Even God knows how thirsty I have been," said the born-again athlete.

Hali yetu kwa kweli ni mbaya Mtanzania kashindwa na wakenya wote, mnyarwanda, mzamambia yaani mpaka na wazungu. Basi amna hata kitu kimoja cha kujivunia kwa kweli wanakera sasa.

Kenya's Muttai wins 400m gold

(AFP) – 3 hours ago

NEW DELHI — Six years of hard work paid off for Kenya's Mark Muttai on Saturday as he upset the odds in powering to the men's Commonwealth Games 400m gold medal.

Muttai crossed the line in 45.44 seconds, a whisker ahead of Australia's Sean Wroe and Ramon Miller of the Bahamas.

With defending 400m champion John Steffensen skipping Delhi after withdrawing as a protest against Athletics Australia, who he described as "egotistical and outdated", the race was wide open.

Muttai was not considered a favourite but stormed through the last 100m to take the title, although a charging Wroe almost stole his thunder.

"This is the first gold medal in my life and the first medal ever. It's like a dream," beamed Muttai.

"I am proud of being Kenyan tonight. I worked six years for this medal and now it's true. I love my whole nation."

While he won, it was a remarkable achievement for Wroe to get second, having only gained a berth in the race when Steffensen withdrew.

Like the Kenyan, he said it was a dream come true.

"It's surreal. A month ago I wasn't even going to run this race," he said.

"I was only supposed to run the 4x400m relay. I had an opportunity and I took it so it's an absolute bonus and I can't believe it.

"Coming down the final straight there were a lot of guys together. I thought back to the hill sessions I did and that helped me to get over the line."

Dunford won the intense race in a time of 23. 35 seconds as South Africa's Mark Roland Schoeman the Commonwealth Games record holder settled for the bronze medal.

Geoff Huegill of Australia won the silver.

Former World champion Eliud Kipchoge and Africa Senior championships bronze medalist Mark Kiptoo won silver and bronze medals respectively in the 5000m.

Compatriot Vincent Yator finished 5th in the race won by Moses Ndiema Kipsiro of

Kenya clinched 5 more medals in day 6 of the ongoing Commonwealth Games in New Delhi India.

Milcah Cheywa, Mercy Njoroge and Gladys Jerotich Kipkemoi made a clean sweep of the podium in the women's 3000m steeplechase final.

Cheywa could not hide her joy after clinching the gold

"We were expecting to win all three because we trained very hard," she said.

"Of course I knew I would win because I had strong competitors this year in the Diamond League. I am very happy and it feels good to win Gold. The race was not tough but the weather was hot."

On her future plans: "It is not over because next year I have to work even harder so I can win the world championship."

On her part, Njoroge expressed her appreciation for Kenyans' support.

"I am very happy to win Silver for them. When they cheer it helps us put in more effort into the race. Cheering for Kenya motivates me, " she said.

"We got ahead with five laps to go. It feels better now after winning Bronze," said Kipkemoi.

Mark Mutai secured another gold medal in the 400m while African Champion Grace Wanjiru won a bronze medal in the women's 20km walk.

400 metres is regarded as a non-Kenyan specialist event and Mutai was elated with his performance.

"I feel very good. This is good for myself and fellow short-distance athletes and my country. This will be good for the morale of the Kenyan athletes," he said.

On his expectations for the upcoming Men's 4x400m Relay:

"Hopefully I can form a combination with the other athletes and get a medal in the 4x400 m Relay."

Earlier Wanjiru clocked 1 hour 37 minutes 49 seconds in the race won by Jo Jackson of England. Compatriot David Kimutai was 4th in the men's race won by Jared Talent of Australia.

Kenya is now ranked 8th with 11 medals, 5 gold 3 silver and 3 bronze.
