Dar es Salaam. Tanzanian boxing sensation Francis Cheka faces being stripped of his World Boxing Federation (WBF) title after the federation resolved to stop sanctioning bouts organised by local promoters.
Cheka, fondly referred to as SMG, claimed the WBF super middleweight title at the expense of American Phil Williams, whom he outpunched on points at the Diamond Jubilee Hall recently. The fight was organised by Jay Msangi of Hall of Fame Boxing & Promotions (HOF) in collaboration with Tanzania Professional Boxing Association (TPBA) and sanctioned by WBF.
However, the event could not go smoothly as almost all local boxers went on strike over allegations of un-cleared payments, whereby the audience had to wait for almost an hour while promoters were sorting out the problem.
In a new turn of events, WBF has warned that local boxing bodies and promoters plotting to organise bouts without following the laid down procedures, will not be allowed anywhere close to the game.
In his letter to minister for Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, Fenella Mukangara on Monday, the WBF president, Howard Goldberg, said he was not happy with the way promoter Msangi treated the two boxers.
The rules are very clear for everyone to follow and when no one respects them, that is when trouble creeps in, reads part of the letter. Police were forced to hold Msangi for interrogation regarding his failure to settle some $8,000 (about Sh13m) on time to Williams after the fight.
This means local promoters may not be able to organise another WBF fight for Cheka for a long time, which could see the boxer being stripped of his title due to inactivity.
When contacted for comment on the matter yesterday, Tanzania Professional Boxing Organisation (TPBO) president, Yassin Abdallah admitted that the decision by WBF will affect boxing development in the country.
He said Cheka will have to stay for a long time without making it into the ring for the tile defence fight.
WBF said in its letter that, from now on, it will have to contact the ministry responsible for sports before entering into any agreement with local boxing federations.
The Cheka-Williams fight did not go smoothly as the former almost went on strike over allegations of un-cleared payments, whereby the audience had to wait for almost an hour while promoters were sorting out the problem.
MinisterMukangara, who was the chief guest, was also forced to intervene to rescue the situation.
Local boxing lovers and pundits described the situation as an embarrassment for Tanzania and called for the government to restrict bogus promoters from organizing such events in the country.
Tanzania Professional Boxing Organization (TPBO) President, Yassin Ustadh Abdallah said that the decision will affect development of the game in the country and may cause Cheka to stay for long time without defending his title if WBF will maintain its stand.
