VAR officials stood down after Manchester derby error

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) officials involved in Erling Haaland’s controversial winning goal during Sunday’s Manchester derby have been stood down following a review of the incident.

VAR official Matt Donohue and his assistant, Blake Antrobus, have not been appointed for this weekend’s Premier League fixtures after Pro Ref reviewed the weekend’s matches. Their availability will be reconsidered after the international break.

Donohue was asked to review referee Michael Oliver’s decision to rule out Haaland’s 60th-minute goal for offside. Using semi-automated offside technology, he determined that Haaland was onside and overturned the decision.

However, Donohue failed to identify that Enzo Fernández had influenced play from an offside position. Pro Ref said this should have resulted in a recommendation for an on-field review.

Chief refereeing officer Howard Webb made the decision to stand down the officials alongside his management team.

Pro Ref later acknowledged an “error of judgment” in the incident and is understood to have contacted Manchester United to explain the mistake.

This is the first time Premier League officials have been stood down this season because of an officiating error.
