The news is depressing, fiscal cliff, mass shootings, economic downturn in Europe etc. The notion that bad news is more newsworthy is backfiring, couple that with all the tablets out there, and the tweets with a gazillion links, and the FB links, people are pretty much DJing and remixing their own news channels.

I still watch CNN though, old habits die hard. Tumekua na CNN enzi za CTN wengine.That was CNN International, which is more palatable than this oftentimes gibberish that passes for TV nowadays.

The US by refusing to have a BBC equivalent (public funded federal TV/Radio, PBS got hammered, it doesn't count) passed up a great opportunity at the soft politics of influence peddling.

I sometimes think Jake Tapper is the only real journalist left at any of the three mainstream media outlets. now he will hopefully be the only real journalist at CNN.

Tapper was the only thing ABC had going for it. Now they will be competing with MSNBC on who can cheer lead the hardest while trying to destroy Obama's political enemies.
The old soviet media was less biased than ABC is now.
Interesting move for CNN. Maybe they will be moving away from advocacy journalism. Hopefully Tapper wont be corrupted.

Following a month in which it experienced its lowest daytime ratings in more than a decade, CNN hit a 20-year primetime ratings low in May.

This wasn't totally unexpected, as CNN had recorded its worst weekly ratings in two decades earlier in the month.
Still, the numbers were disastrous, with CNN attracting the lowest monthly primetime total viewership since October 1991 and the second lowest-rated month in more than 20 years in the advertiser important A25-54 demographic.

May was a slow news month for all the major cable news networks, with Fox off nine percent and MSNBC off 19 percent overall compared to May 2011, but CNN's audience fell a whopping 51 percent by comparison. CNN was also off by 61 percent in the A25-54 demo.

That translated to an average of 1.7 million total primetime viewers for Fox News, 674,000 for MSNBC and a paltry 389,000 for CNN.

The news was bad across the board for all of CNN's primetime programs, but two programs bore the brunt of the ratings collapse.

The Piers Morgan Show managed to rack up the lowest-rated hour in more than 20 years in both the overall audience and the A25-54 demo. Erin Burnet's show didn't fare much better, with the worst ratings in the A25-54 demo in the 7 p.m. hour in more than 20 years as well.

The immediate outlook for CNN isn't very good as the summer months are notoriously slow news months, and could send the ratings down even further.

CNN is still very profitable for Time-Warner, largely fueled by the success of CNN International. But if the ratings continue to sag there will be little reason for advertisers to support CNN, which will have a significant impact on its operations going forward.

Tuesday evening, during the 10 p.m. hour, CNN's Anderson Cooper beat his competitors at Fox News and MSNBC in the key 25-54 demo.
Cooper's 284k in the demo during 10 p.m. was enough to beat Fox's Greta Van Susteren(260k) and MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell(243k). However, in total viewership, Cooper (710k) placed third behind Van Susteren (1.51M) and O'Donnell (1.03M).
Additionally, in the demo, CNN beat MSNBC for all primetime hours except for the 5 p.m. slot.

Where Are All the TV Viewers? Ratings Are Down Across the Board

The pattern of plummeting ratings across the board in network television continued - with a vengeance- Tuesday night as numerous shows hit either a low-water mark for this season or even the entire series run.

On Fox, "Glee" scored the lowest rating in the show's history, a 2.4 in the 18- to 49-year-old age group that determines much of the network's ad sales. On ABC, the new comedy "Last Man Standing" sank to a season (and thus all-time) low with just a 1.6 rating. And the drama "Private Practice," moved to a tryout at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, plunged to a lowest-ever 1.7 rating.

In addition, the hit CBS drama "N.C.I.S." scored a 3.0, its worst rating this season. And the results show for the singing contest "The Voice" on NBC scored a 3.3, not only the lowest the show has scored all season but its second-worst rating ever. NBC's new fashion reality show, "Fashion Star," also set a new mark for lowest ratings.

Network executives have been scratching their heads to explain the sweeping collapse of so many shows at the same time. One factor appears to be daylight saving time, and some executives have pointed to the unusually warm spring weather, which is sending people outdoors, especially early in the evening. It does seem that the 8 p.m. entries have been most affected.

But the effect has been felt across the night: So, what's happening? Another explanation, which has yet to be established by statistical research, is that more people are using DVRs and delaying their viewing.

More and more shows are experiencing significant increases in ratings when delayed viewing is included, but why that viewing habit would suddenly influence a number of shows at the same time in the middle of the television season has yet to be explained.
