Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA), Mr Freeman Mbowe
The Central Committee of the opposition party, Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA), held a meeting in Dar es Salaam on Sunday and hinted that it was setting strategies to assume power in 2015.
CHADEMA National Chairman, Mr Freeman Mbowe, said the CCM government was not doing enough to address the rising costs of living. "The inflation has increased from 19.8 per cent last year to 24 this year, while the local currency has depreciated to 13 per cent .
The national budget has increased from just 1.6trl/- to 12.6trl/- over the past ten years," Mr Mbowe, who is also leader of the Opposition in Parliament, said. He said his party would print and distribute fliers all over the country to enlighten people on crucial issues they must present to the Constitutional Review Commission.
The CHADEMA boss also urged state organs to be partial and take action on murder cases involving members of his party instead of taking sides. He said 16 CHADEMA members were killed during the by-election in Igunga while three others were killed during the recent by-election in Arumeru but the police had not taken any action.
During the meeting, local businessman and ‘philanthropist' Mr Mustafa Sabodo pledged to assist the party construct its headquarters. The senior citizen said he would discuss the issue with his children on how to fulfil his pledge. Mr Sabodo said despite being a member of Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), he had never been accorded so much respect as given by CHADEMA.
Stressing his point, Mr Sabodo said he had never been invited to CCM meetings much as his contribution to CHADEMA was hardly one per cent of what he had contributed to the ruling party. He said it was only the Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, who had accorded him respect, adding:
"I'm not saying CCM is a bad party. It is important though to give credit where it is due." He said life was hard for ordinary Tanzanians, but CHADEMA was doing its best to reach out to the poor. Mr Sabodo rejected suggestion that CHADEMA had religious inclination, stressing that the party had managed to unite many Tanzanians despite their religious and tribal differences.
