CCM shines at elections of mayors

WHILE the Ruling Party Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) has won most mayoral seats in an election held on Friday in various parts of the country, Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) went home with one seat only in Moshi Municipality.

The Councillor for Gongo la Mboto Ward in Dar es Salaam Mr Jerry William Slaa was on Friday elected as the new mayor for Ilala Municipality, promising to effectively implement the CCM manifesto.

Mr Slaa said President Kikwete expects a lot from Ilala Municipality, the heart of Dar es Salaam Region. He urged all councillors to efficiently and effectively collaborate to eliminate peoples' grievances.

Mr Slaa was elected by the councillors from all wards of Ilala district, at a function which was convened at the Ilala municipal council chamber, where Mr Khery Mohamed Kessy was elected the new deputy mayor.

Announcing the results, Ilala District Council Director, Mr Gabriel Fuime said a total of 39 votes were cast and three votes were spoilt. Both Jerry and Khery scored 36 votes.

In another development, the newly elected Ilala Municipality mayor Mr Jerry William Slaa, on Friday appointed three councillors to represent the Municipality in the Dar es Salaam city council.

Those appointed include the former Ilala municipality mayor Mr Abuu Juma who is the councillor for Jangwani Ward.

Others are Magina Lufungulo a councillor for Buguruni Ward and Saada Mandwanga a special seats councillor.

Reports from Serengeti show that Mr John Ng'oina was on Friday re-elected to be the council chairman for Serengeti District Council for the third time after scooping 34 votes out of 39 cast.

Mr Ng'oina is the councilor for the newly established Mbalimbali ward on CCM ticket. His opponent Mr Jackson Maganya of CHADEMA got five votes only. Mr Ng'oina pledged to execute his duties without favour and give people's development priority.

Latest reports had it the election in Rorya and Tarime District councils delayed following misunderstandings among councillors.

There were also confirmed reports that three CCM councillors have resigned in Rorya following the misunderstandings.

In Tarime CHADEMA councillors boycotted the exercise for several hours demanding release of Bumera councillor Mr Tengera who won the post October 31 while in Tarime prison.

In Moshi, Bomambuzi ward councillor in Moshi Municipality, Mr Jaffari Michael (CHADEMA) was yesterday unanimously elected Mayor of Moshi Municipal Council in a secret ballot, while Deputy Mayor is Mr Vincent Remoy, a Kiboriloni councillor also under the ticket of CHADEMA.

Announcing the poll results, the Municipal Executive Director, Ms Bernadette Kinabo, said Michael won the post by 24 votes, defeating his challenger, Mr Michael Mwita (CCM), a councillor of Kaloleni ward, who earned 5 votes.

Mr Rimoy easily defeated Priscus Tarimo, a Kilimanjaro ward councillor by the same margin of votes.

Thanking the councillors for the smoothly run election, Mr Michael, the new Mayor from the opposition camp, pledged to serve the electorate fairly in collaboration with other key stakeholders and development activists.

Morogoro Municipal Council has sworn 39 councillors on Friday from 29 wards all of whom are from CCM.

Mr Amir Nondo of Boma Ward becomes the Mayor of the Municipal Council and Deputy Mayor is Ms Lydia Mbiagi of Magorofani Ward.

While gracing the new Councillors' Council, the District Commissioner (DC), Mr Said Mwambungu urged them to work as a team in order to implement the Millennium Development Goals (MDG's).

Meanwhile, councillors in the Municipality of Bukoba have elected Dr Anatoli Amani (CCM) the new Mayor.

He scooped a total of 19 votes out of 23 edging his rival, Mr Israel Mulaki (Chadema) who got four votes.

Dr Amani is the Councillor for Kagondo Ward while Mr Mulaki is Councillor for Kibeta Ward. The Councillors also elected Mr Alexander Ngalinda (CCM) for the post of Deputy Mayor.

He collected a total of 17 votes edging Mr Dismas Lutagwerera (Chadema) who got six votes.
