Busoga Kingdom has postponed its September 13–19 coronation celebrations that were scheduled to take place at the Mayuge District headquarters, following the death of Tooro King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
The kingdom said the decision is intended to give the people of Busoga and Uganda an opportunity to participate in the mourning and burial of the late Omukama.
The postponement affects the week long coronation celebrations, but Gabula Day on September 9 will go ahead under a revised programme, according to Busoga Prime Minister Joesph Muvawala.
Muvawala said the day’s activities will begin with the opening of a new community school in Buyende District before shifting to prayers in honour of the late Tooro king.
The changes mean that while Busoga’s planned celebrations will be scaled back, the kingdom will use Gabula Day to pay tribute to Oyo, whose death has prompted mourning across the country.
The late King Oyo, who became Omukama of Tooro in 1995, died after more than three decades on the throne. His death has brought together cultural institutions and their subjects in mourning ahead of his burial.
Busoga Kingdom is expected to announce a new date for the postponed coronation celebrations after the burial arrangements for the Tooro king are concluded.
