Brits believe mixed-race people are the 'most attractive and successful'

By Jenny Hope

The British regard people of mixed race as the most attractive and successful, say psychologists.

Celebrities such as formula one champion Lewis Hamilton, footballer Ryan Giggs and X Factor star Leona Lewis have helped boost the image of mixed race people, according to a new study.

Psychological testing found they outstrip people who are white or black in terms of perceived attractiveness, with a rating that far exceeds their representation in British society.

Lead researcher Dr Michael Lewis, who carried out the largest study of its kind, believes there may be more than one reason for the cultural shift.

He says a 'fusion' of black, white and mixed races would lead to 'Mr and Mrs Average' being mixed race, resulting in people more readily identifying with them.

But there could also be a Darwinian explanation, with cross-breeding between diverse genetic backgrounds naturally leading to more genetically 'fit' people who tend to be more attractive.

However, TV's X Factor could be responsible for the trend by exposing relatively more talented people from mixed race backgrounds to the public gaze.

Dr Lewis and colleagues from Cardiff University’s School of Psychology collected a random sample of 1,205 black, white, and mixed-race faces from Facebook communities, including 'mixed race and proud' and Cornwall-based.

Each face was then rated for their perceived attractiveness to others on a scale of one to 10 by 40 female students.

Overall, there was a 55 per cent chance that mixed-race faces were perceived as being more attractive than either black or white faces.

But the 'extremely attractive' ratings were dominated by mixed race faces, who made up one in 10 of them.

This is a much greater proportion than would be expected based on their representation in British society of around three per cent, said Dr Lewis.

Dr Lewis said 'Previous, small scale, studies have suggested that people of mixed race are perceived as being more attractive than non-mixed-race people. This study was an attempt to put this to the wider test.

Other high-profile figures include Ryan Giggs and Tiger Woods, he told the British Psychological Society conference in Stratford on Avon.

Dr Lewis said humans are drawn to 'average' faces when they rate attractiveness, which could mean mixed race faces emerge the winners out of an amalgam of black, white and brown.

'They have become Mr and Mrs Average' he said.

A more complex explanation was first put forward by Darwin in 1876, who described a biological phenomenon called heterosis or hybrid vigour.

This predicts that cross-breeding will lead to offspring that are genetically fitter than their parents.

It is possible that humans are also subject to this process, so the mixing of diverse genetic background leads to greater genetic fitness 'which tends to be linked to attractiveness', said Dr Lewis.

'There is evidence, albeit anecdotal, that the impact of heterosis goes beyond just attractiveness.

'This comes from the observation that, although mixed-race people make up a small proportion of the population, they are over-represented at the top level of a number of meritocratic professions like acting with Halle Berry, Formula 1 racing with Lewis Hamilton; and, of course, politics with Barack Obama' he added.

Dr Lewis said the popularity of shows like the X Factor, which had featured a high number of talented mixed race contestants also helped. 'This could be part of changing attitudes towards black people' he added.

ETHNICITY UNRAVELLED said:
Tiger Woods is one quarter Chinese, one quarter Thai, one quarter African American, one eighth Native American, and one eighth Dutch.

He refers to his ethnic make-up as ‘calabinasian’ – coined from Caucasian, Black, American Indian, and Asian.

His father Earl Woods was of mixed African American, Chinese and Native American heritage. His mother Kultida Woods (née Punsawad) is originally from Thailand and has Chinese and Dutch ancestry as well as Thai.

Barack Obama is half Caucasian and half Kenyan. Although he was born in Hawaii, his mother Ann Dunham is from Kansas and has primarily English heritage. His father Barack Obama Senior is a Luo from the Nyanza province of Kenya.

Oscar winner Halle Berry is half Caucasian and half African American. Her mother Judith Ann Hawkins is white. Berry’s father, Jerome Jesse Berry, was an African American.

Formula one champion Lewis Hamilton is half white British and half Grenadian. His mother, Carmen Lockhart, is white British, while his paternal grandparents are from Grenada and emigrated to the United Kingdom in the 1950s.

X Factor star Leona Lewis is half Guyanese and half Welsh. Her father, Aural Josiah Lewis is of Afro-Guyanese descent and her mother Maria Lewis is Welsh.

Manchester United footballer Ryan Giggs is of primarily Welsh descent, but is one-quarter Sierra Leonean. His paternal grandfather is from Sierra Leone. Ryan Giggs decribes his father as ‘black’ and himself as ‘mixed race.

Is not because they are notable? the list of successful mixed race people are few compared to the unmixed race! how can you draw conclusion? THEY ARE ATTRACTIVE YES not otherwise!

Tell those reserachers s to pay visit kwa waburushi ni Bonde la Mpunga Mbarali, tell them to see if all wapemba are successful, the list goes on Tabora and Dodoma they have mixed race of Hindians and blacks and Arab and blacks. The jouney continues to the Mozambique where population of mix race of portuguese and blacks do exist, the Journey will go on to Angola!; never mention the troublesome and crack headed halfcast in Harare Zimbabwe most of them are drug users!

oh Please, They are just brainwashed!!! Every race has it's own share of attractive and accomplished people. the examples above are too few and far in between.

It could be because Mixed-race individuals catch a whole lot less flack from White people relative to run-of-the-mill raw Africans like X-Paster et al.

That said, it appears this study is probably not meant to extrapolate to other societies/cultures than British/Western. So there's no need for Waberoya to get all worked up about "Waburushi" in Bonde la Mpunga Mbarali, and "troublesome and crack headed halfcast" in Harare...

It could be true I have cross-mixed children , nothing so sweat, but the difference exists.

Beauty is subjective and my girl's Tanzanian skin is more beautiful to me any day, kuliko machotara wengi.. This conclusion is interesting trivia but nothing beyond that.

You damn right Mluguru....mixed peeps are da bizness

Kweli mkuu. Watu wanayo makusudi yao. Wanataka kuwavimbisha vichwa wenzio.

Success=comes from hard work, persistence.luck and going the extra mile..Race should and does not determine this, unfortunately in our world of black people being colonised for so long we have inferiority complexes that make us believe that white people are better than us,that someone is more attractive because they are mixed race .

It seems despite the perceived freedom many Africans still feel that race can be used as a factor in rating the attractiveness,or successs of people..Stop hair splitting stupid things like race, ethnicity and color and get to working.

We need to free our minds.

I believe it's in us, the black race to be aggressive and hard working. We are also very talented kwa hiyo it's no surprise many successful athletes, entertainers, actors and actresses are successful. We are blessed race

Rostam Aziz, Mama Meghji, Jitu Patel, Mwisho Mwampamba wote hawa ni mixed race na wako very successfull!!!!

Ahaaaaa Ndio maaana unakuta wasichana wengi wa kibongo wanahangaikia na kutapata wapate Mix race babies ?asante kwa kutujulisha hali halisi ,sasa makwisha tambuwa janja yao.
