Anyama lost the NRM primary to James Leku Pilli in results declared on September 3, with Leku polling 9,336 votes against Anyama’s 9,152.
The narrow margin prompted Anyama to secure nomination as an independent candidate, setting up a rematch with Leku in the general election.
However, the contest will now not take place after Anyama withdrew from the race.
Speaking on Aulogo FM, NRM Vice Chairperson for Northern Uganda Denis Hamson Obua said Anyama stepped aside after President Yoweri Museveni asked him to withdraw in the interest of party cohesion.
Obua described Anyama’s decision as voluntary.
