The Ugandan media fraternity is mourning the death of veteran journalist Joseph Sseruwooza, a parliamentary reporter and current affairs host at BBS Terefayina, who passed away on Friday morning at Mulago.
Sseruwooza was widely known for his coverage of Parliament and for hosting Zuukuka N'Ensonga, a current affairs programme on BBS. Through his reporting, he became a familiar face to viewers following legislative debates, governance issues, and national politics.
According to reports from colleagues and friends, Sseruwooza initially complained of severe chest and stomach pain on Thursday, which he believed were ulcer-related complications. He was taken to a medical facility where he received treatment, but his condition continued to deteriorate. Further examinations later revealed that he had suffered a heart attack caused by a blocked coronary artery.
He was subsequently transferred to the Uganda Heart Institute for specialized treatment and was being prepared for a procedure to unblock the artery. However, despite efforts by medical personnel to stabilize him, he passed away in the early hours of Friday.
Tributes have since poured in from journalists, politicians, and members of the public, many remembering Sseruwooza for his professionalism, calm presentation style, and dedication to informing the public on matters of national importance. Colleagues described him as a committed journalist who helped make parliamentary proceedings accessible to ordinary Ugandans, particularly Luganda-speaking audiences.
BBS Terefayina confirmed his death and described him as a valued member of the station. Funeral and burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family and the media house.
