The mess in the country's education system has, from 2002 to date, resulted into a production of 800,000 poorly skilled young men and women with serious problems competing for slots in both the local and international job markets. The leading opposition party, Chadema, said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that statistics show that 500,000 children dropped out of Class I in 2002 while in 2012 over 300,000 students who sat the Form Four examinations got between Divisions Four and Zero.
Chadema youth wing-Baraza la Vijana Chadema (Bavicha) secretary general Deogratius Munishi told a news conference that if the education crisis isn't resolved quickly, Tanzania's workplaces would soon be filled with shoddily skilled, unskilled and illiterate personnel.
He was reacting to the poor results of national Form Four exams announced by the government earlier this week, indicating that six out of every 10 Form 4 candidates of last year failed. The number of candidates with Division Zero rose from 31.94 per cent in 2011 to 53.37 per cent in 2012.
A total of 240,903 students out of 397,126 students who sat the 2012 National Form Four exams failed, according to the minister for Education and Vocational Training, Dr Shukuru Kawambwa.
Mr Munishi said the mess in the education sector was a consequence of the government's reluctance to accommodate and implement stakeholders' recommendations that would have addressed the bad situation. As a result, he added, a huge number of youngsters is left without skills and good education to qualify them for the limited employment opportunities or self-employment.
He observed that government schools have 50,000 places for Form 5 while only 23,520 have qualified, which interprets to a deficit of 26,470.
According to Mr Munishi, the shaken education sector will also affect universities in that by failing to provide the required number of students for high schools, the present university enrollment capacity of 65,000 students won't be fully exploited.
"The plan to increase enrolment of students to university students to 300,000 by 2015 as stipulated in the CCM manifesto will remain a sheer pipe dream," said Mr Munishi.
According to him, the Chadema youth wing is organising countrywide demonstrations to be held in case the Education Minister and his senior officers won't comply with the 14-day ultimatum to resign as issued by the party's chairman, Freeman Mbowe following the pathetic exams performance.
He said they are instructing regional and district youth leaderships to communicate with all those who failed so that they get ready for the marches on the date and schedule to be announced in due course.
"On accountability grounds, the minister, his permanent secretary and the director of secondary school education must resign with immediate effect" he said.
