Vilanova to step down as Barca boss

TITO VILANOVA is set to step down as Barcelona boss after suffering a suspected relapse of a tumour he had removed last year.
The 44-year-old Spaniard had emergency surgery last November to remove the growth on his parotid gland — the largest of the human salivary glands.

But the tumour is now thought to have returned and the Catalan giants are searching for a temporary replacement manager.
Vilanova replaced Pep Guardiola in the Barca hotseat last summer and has taken them nine points clear at the top of La Liga.

The club released a statement this morning announcing they had suspended all media activities for today but did not go into details.

They confirmed a further announcement would be made later today.
The statement read: “Barcelona announce that it is has suspended the press conference from president Sandro Rosell planned for midday. As well as that, the media Christmas lunch has been cancelled.
“Later today the club will issue a further release. Until that time we will not make any announcement about this matter.
“We regret any inconvenience this decision may cause.”

Barcelona have named assistant manager Jordi Roura as the temporary coach of the side following the announcement that Tito Vilanova is due to undergo surgery for cancer.

Roura, who came through the club's La Masia system as a player, will take over the day-to-day running of the side while Vilanova undergoes treatment.

Barca's chief Andoni Zubizarreta told a press conference: "Roura will sit on the bench at Valladolid [who Barca face on Saturday in La Liga], but the coach is Tito.

"From then we have discussed how to follow this and we will do with the naturality of our project. Tito isn't here now, Jordi is here, all the training staff are here for the players to work at their maximum."

Roura began his career as a player at Camp Nou, and then became a coach in Japan with Yokohama Flugels before moving on to Terrassa FC until 2007.

The 45-year-old then moved on to CE L'Hospitalet in the Spanish third tier, before he joined Pep Guardiola's technical staff in 2009, charged with analysing opposition sides.

Following Guardiola's departure in June - and Vilanova's promotion to coach - Roura became Barca's assistant manager.

Vilanova, who had surgery on a cancerous tumour on a gland in his throat in November 2011, is expected to undergo treatment on Thursday.

He is expected to remain in hospital for three or four days, and then faces chemotherapy and radiotherapy sessions over the following six weeks.

"Tito had scheduled for yesterday a routine test, at noon we thought everything was OK," continued Zubizaretta.

"At 7pm we were informed there could be a problem and this morning we got the exact diagnostic. From the first moment Tito sent us a message of calm before this situation, he knew it was a complicated and tough situation, but also that we had already lived it and we were going to overcome it."

Barcelona president Sandro Rosell added: "Our trust in him is total, the club is united and strong and we are capable of overcome anything."
