Army ready to defend Malawi says MDF Commander Odillo

Malawian Foreign Affairs Minister Ephraim Nganda Chiume, on Thursday led a team of government officials on a tour of the border district of Karonga to assure people of their safety amid simmering tension with Tanzania. 'We wanted to assure the people that their security is guaranteed,' Chiume said.

Tanzania hatuna jadi ya kufanya uvamizi, lakini kila anayetuvamia ndio unakuwa mwisho wake maana anafagiwa mpaka nje ya mipaka ya nchi yake. Sasa nao wamalawi kama wanafikiri Iddi amin dada nduli wa uganda alikuwa mpuzi zaidi yao, basi wajaribu kuleta uvamizi active Tanzania. The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) "is ready to protect citizens and the interests of the country," the Army Commander General Henry Odillo told The Sunday Times in an exclusive interview.

Odillo, recently inducted into the Hall of Fame by the United States military college, guaranteed that with the MDF, "peace in Malawi will be there and we can assure Malawians that they are safe."

He said it was "critical that the country should remain peaceful and stable to move forward...the society and individuals should use combined effort to ensure that this is sustained".

The Commander urged Malawians not to leave the sustenance of peace to the military alone, but ensure that there is stability in the areas that they are living in by relaying information to Police and the Army when "unusual things happen around them."

"This is why we have our police presence in all regions of the country; so, if people in that locality have noticed unusual issues happening around them, I think they should not sit down and pretend that there is nothing happening, they should be reporting these things to the Police.

"That is where issues start being exposed; you start understanding the picture of what is developing around you," he said.

SEPARATING POLITICS FROM PROFESSION

The Commander says it is important to ensure that "the peace which has been invested in this country for a long time" is safeguarded by realizing that peace comes with a huge, huge price and investment".

"Sometimes when things happen, you need to sit back and reflect on some serious issues and perhaps you come to realize the importance of your position- for instance, those which we are holding as officers in the Malawi Defence Force."

He said he had on several occasions told fellow officers within the MDF of the importance of separating politics and their profession.

"It is a clear point which I have been emphasizing and I never stop emphasizing that our officers and soldiers should never be involved in politics. I think we have a role to play in this country."

HUGE RESPONSIBILITY

He said the MDF had a " huge responsibility ... whereby we should now start realizing our position in terms of what sort of contribution can we make to support our democracy in this country? It is not an easy task."

He said he was convinced that despite the challenges the Army encounters, officers, soldiers and members of the Malawi Defense Force should have a clear focus in their role in the Malawi society.

"I think we are here for a reason. We are here to protect this country. The people of this country do look up to us for protection. I think that is a responsibility which should not be taken lightly," he said, stressing on the importance of maintaining discipline in the uniformed organization in Malawi.

Odillo said he draws inspiration from the officers around him and the prayers to God seeking peace.

Odillo was inducted into the International Hall of Fame by the United States Army Command and General Staff College on September 24 for being a graduate of the college who has risen in the MDF ranks and file to the position of a Commander. He was at this college in the USAfor one year, ending in 1996.

Some 250 officers have since 1973 been inducted to the Hall of Fame.
