An Army chief wants to ban soldiers from eating sandwiches.
Major General James Cowan has proposed that members of the Army should not be served sandwiches or finger food in a bid to stamp out ''barbaric habits''.
The decorated soldier - who believes ''a gentleman or a lady uses a knife and fork'' - is in charge of approximately 2,500 troops and wrote the three-page memo to senior officers after noticing that standards had dropped at the Bulford barracks in Wiltshire, in south-west England.
He wrote: ''Quite a few officers in the divisional mess seem to be under the impression that they can eat their food with their hands.
''The practice of serving rolls and sandwiches in the mess is to stop. A gentleman or lady always uses a knife and fork.''
