Arusha. A civil servant is now contemplating a court battle after he lost his job following his decision to defect from the ruling party and joined the opposition in the quest to become an MP.
Mr Anthony Musani received a letter of termination few days after his bid to secure nomination to compete in Arumeru East by-election through Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) failed.
His employer fired him because of absconding from his duty station for a long time "without" any valid explanation. However, he is planning to sue the ruling party for damages.
Mr Musani first tried his luck with CCM but he was defeated during the primary polls and he decided to shift to Chadema, where he also failed to secure the party ‘s endorsement.
But he is lamenting that his sacking was against the law and he now plans to take to court the ruling CCM claiming that it engineered his sacking after he defected to Chadema.
After losing during the preferential votes cast on February 20, this year, which propelled Mr Sioi Sumari being nominated to vie for the seat on the CCM ticket, Mr Musani joined Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema).
A few days later, he was fired as the head of Leguruki Secondary School, which is managed by the Tanzania Parents Association (Tapa) that is affiliated to the ruling party.
The official showed reporters at Usa River at the weekend a copy of a letter which terminated his services as the school headmaster after joining Chadema immediately after he lost in the CCM primaries.
The letter with Ref. No.WAZ/AR/SCHO/VOL.II/42/182 signed by the Arusha regional Tapa secretary, Ms Anna Kiromo, said Mr Musani has been fired because of absconding from his duty station for a long time without any valid explanation.
The embattled official, who is now active in the opposition Chadema, has been requested to hand over the office immediately.
After losing in the CCM primaries, Mr Musani also vied for the Arumeru East parliamentary seat candidacy on the Chadema ticket but lost to Joshua Nassari who has since been proclaimed the party's flag bearer in the by-election slated for April 1, this year.
He said he was surprised why he was sacked from his job whereas he has been contesting the constituency's seat in 2005, 2010 and this year without being warned that he was absconding from duty to engage in politics.
"I believe I have been sacked because of joining Chadema," he pointed out. During the CCM preliminaries on February 20, he emerged the fifth among the six contestants. He garnered 22 votes.
He said he was an accomplished teacher and that before being posted to the Tapa-owned Leguruki School in 2002, he taught at Makumira Secondary School for years. He said CCM would now have to pay him for damages.
Before joining Chadema, Mr Musani was a member of the CCM executive committee for Arumeru District and a member of the Tapa national annual general meeting. At different times, he served as a district secretary for the CCM-affiliated association.
He warned that Leguruki Secondary School was likely to lose its supporters for development projects he initiated while there. These include a Sh15-million solar energy project, rehabilitation of dormitories estimated to cost Sh25 million and some promised Sh5 million for the purchase of books.
Efforts to get comments from Ms Kiromo on the issue prove futile as the regional Tapa official could not respond through her mobile phone which kept on calling repeatedly.
Meanwhile, the CCM Youth wing (UVCCM) in Arumeru District has hailed the decision by their party to nominate Mr Sumari as the party flag bearer in the by-election set for April 1, this year.
However, while the wing has received the nomination with open hands, the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) has continued to arrest people in connection with bribery during the CCM nomination process in the district.
The latest incident involves the arrest of one of UVCCM leaders in the district. But he was released on bail after being questioned for several hours.
The statement issued by the UVCCM chairperson in the district, Ms Esther Maleko, said they were happy because the nomination has answered their plea. Ms Maleko said UVCCM has regarded the nomination as a sign of victory not only for the ruling party, but also for the people of Arumeru East.
"We are now ready to campaign for the candidate we had wanted. We are sure that we are going to win because we have a better candidate to back up our good policies,' she said.
On the other hand, one UVCCM leader, who was in PCCB wanted list for some days, was arrested at the weekend in Arumeru before he was brought to Arusha for interrogation.
