Like you said 4K starts making sense at 42 or 50" and above...

Any screen size below 50" and your eyes and brain won't be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 4K. 1080 will look just as good. Stretch the screen a little further and you'll see the difference between 4K and overstretched 1080.

So anyone salivating to 4K better get a huge screen first.

Funny in Africa we're envying 4K while the world has moved on to 8K.. but 8K again starts making sense over 4K when the screen is 92" or larger. Anything smaller and the human eye won't be able to tell the difference.
I have revisited this wonderful post as my TV has power issue.
