Acid attack on two British women in Zanzibar

ZANZIBAR

Attackers in the east African island of Zanzibar threw acid into the faces of two young British women late Wednesday night, the first such assault against foreigners in the popular tourist destination, police said Thursday.

Two men on a moped threw the acid at the 18-year old women as they strolled through the streets of Stone Town, the historical centre of the capital of the semi-autonomous Tanzanian archipelago, splashing their faces, chests and hands.

"Police in Zanzibar have launched a manhunt, and we ask for public assistance in identifying the attackers," deputy police commissioner Mkadam Khamis said.

The attack on the women, both working as charity volunteers on the island, came at the end of the Muslim holy month of fasting of Ramadan, and as people began to celebrate the Eid holiday.

"The motive for the attack on the volunteers aged 18 years, has not been established. Investigations are on until we apprehend the criminals," Khamis said.

The women were flown to Tanzania's economic capital Dar es Salaam for treatment, where their wounds were said to be "not life threatening", said Saleh Mohammed Jidawi, a senior health ministry official.

Tourism is the main foreign currency earner for Zanzibar, famed for its white-sand beaches and historical buildings in Stone Town, listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO.

"It may threaten tourists," said Abdul Samad, chairman of the Zanzibar Association for Tourism Investors.

There have been a series of attacks in the archipelago, including an acid attack on a Muslim cleric in November, and the shooting dead of a Catholic priest in February. Another priest was shot and wounded in December.

The islands are mainly Muslim, with some three per cent of the 1.2 million people Christian.

Two British women have had acid thrown in their faces in Zanzibar, police on the east African island say.
Katie Gee and Kirstie Trup, both 18 and from London, were working as volunteer teachers on the island.
Their mothers, Nicky Gee and Rochelle Trup, said they expected them to return to the UK on Thursday night.
The Foreign Office said it was "concerned to hear of an attack on two British nationals" and was "providing consular assistance".
The women's mothers said in a statement: "Both families are extremely upset and distressed at this completely unprovoked attack on their lovely daughters who had only gone to Zanzibar with good intention. We understand that they will be flying home overnight.
"We appreciate all the interest and support we have received from the media but we would ask that we are left alone until we have been reunited with our daughters."
Nicky Gee told Sky News her daughter's whole face and body had been burned by acid in the attack.

Family statement, read by friend Doug Morris: "We are extremely upset and distressed at this unprovoked attack"

Police said two men on a moped threw the acid at the women, splashing their faces, chests and hands as they walked through the streets of Stone Town, the old part of the island's capital Zanzibar City, which is a Unesco world heritage site.
Deputy police commissioner Mkadam Khamis told AFP news agency: "The motive for the attack on the volunteers aged 18 years, has not been established. Investigations are on until we apprehend the criminals."
The two women were volunteers for the charity Art in Tanzania, having booked through the company i-to-i Travel.
Kari Korhonen runs Art in Tanzania with two other directors. He told the BBC in an email the "ladies are OK considering the seriousness of this type of case".
He added: "We have been operating as NGO some 10 years and this is the first serious incident."
He said he found out about the incident immediately after it took place and that the charity was "sorting out the incident background with the British High Commission and the Tanzanian-Zanzibar government".
Another of Art In Tanzania's representatives in Zanzibar said the two women had been volunteering with the organisation for just over two weeks. He said they had been on their way to dinner when they were attacked.
In a statement, i-to-i Travel said: "All our efforts remain focussed on ensuring they are supported whilst assisting them and their relatives with the arrangements for their return home."
It added that "the motive for the incident is as yet not known".
The women were in the final week of their trip, i-to-i Travel said.
The police on Zanzibar said it was the first time foreigners had been attacked in this way.

The BBC's Tulanana Bohela in Dar es Salaam says Islam is the main religion on Zanzibar and in more remote parts of the island, away from tourist beaches, there are signs asking foreigners to respect the local culture and cover up - in case skimpy outfits upset villagers.
However, most islanders depend on tourism for their livelihoods and are happy to see tourists and there is little antagonism towards them, she says.
Tanzania's minister of information, tourism, culture and sports, Said Ali Mbarouk, condemned the attack.
"We should co-operate with other government sectors to ensure that the perpetrators are arrested and brought to justice," he said.
"And I beg our nationals, this is not something they should be doing. Tourism is the strongest pillar of our economy, so if we do such acts we are killing our economy, and our livelihoods in general.
"So it is not an honourable thing to do, it's a bad thing and it should be condemned by all citizens of Zanzibar."
The Foreign Office's travel advice for the semi-autonomous Zanzibar is the same as that for the rest of Tanzania.
The Foreign Office says that while the majority of 75,000 British nationals have "trouble free" visits to Tanzania every year, "violent and armed crime is increasing" and "there is an underlying threat from terrorism".
It also says that "mugging, bag snatching (especially from passing cars) and robbery have increased throughout the country" and "in Zanzibar incidents have taken place in Stone Town and on popular tourist beaches".
Recent attacks in Zanzibar include an acid attack on a Muslim cleric in November, and the shooting dead of a Catholic priest in February. Another priest was shot and wounded in December.
Jeremy Lefroy MP, chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Tanzania, said the country had a "very peaceful tradition" and local police were apparently "as shocked as anybody" by the attack.

Two Jewish teens from London victims of acid attack in Zanzibar
DEBKAfile August 9, 2013, 7:15 PM (GMT+02:00)
Katie Gee and Kristen Trup, both 18, were walking in the Zanzibar capital of Stone Town in their last week of a trip as volunteer teachers, when two men on a moped threw acid at them. They suffered severe burns to their hands, chests and faces. The girls, both members of the Federation for Zionist Youth, arrived in the UK Friday, accompanied by their families, and were admitted to a London hospital after receiving first aid care at a hospital in Dar es-Salaam. Zanzibar police have offered a reward of 10m Tanzanian shillings ($6,170) for information leading to the capture of the attackers. Earlier this year, two Christian leaders were killed on the predominantly Muslim island province and in November a cleric was treated in hospital after an acid attack.

Katie Gee and Kirstie Trup, both aged 18, had argued with a local shopkeeper days before two men on a moped threw acid in their faces and Katie had separately been attacked for singing during Ramadan.

One friend suggested they might have been singled out because they are Jewish, and local police said they wanted to speak a radical Islamic preacher who they believe may have inspired the attack.

The teenagers are due to fly back to the UK overnight and are expected to be taken to hospital for further treatment when they arrive home.

The teenagers from north London were teaching at the St Monica nursery school, linked to the Catholic church, whilst volunteering for a charity called Art in Tanzania after finishing their A-levels.

Two days ago Miss Gee tweeted that she had met former US president Bill Clinton, who visited Zanzibar on Sunday to pledge support for anti-malaria work through his Clinton Health Access Initiative.

Bashir Ismail, of Art in Tanzania, said they had argued with a nearby shop owner a few days ago when they went for groceries.

Mr Ismail said the two women, who were staying in Stone Town, were properly dressed when the attack happened as they were going for dinner at a beach restaurant.

"The two attackers passed by several white tourists in the area and threw acid after reaching closer to them which raises suspicion of a planned attack," Mr Ismail said.

A friend said Katie, a former pupil at the £5,375 per term Francis Holland School in Sloane Square, Chelsea, had also been attacked two weeks ago.

Oli Cohen, 21, said: "The girls were walking through the town singing on Ramadan when a Muslim lady came up to her shouting. She lost her temper and reacted violently – and hit her in the face for singing.

"I don't know what song it was but it wouldn't have been anything excessively aggressive or rude – they're so well-mannered and respectful they had gone to the town to do voluntary charity work.

"It was an isolated incident and I don't believe it had any connection, she didn't suffer any serious injuries – but they were both extremely shaken up by it. Not enough to come home but I know they felt uneasy being in public. Some people would stare or say things to them.

"I think white good-looking north London Jewish girls walking around in Zanzibar always make them a target as it's a Muslim country.

"It's a beautiful location and it was a trip that was supposed to be special for them, one to treasure forever. But it's ended in disaster."

The friends were in the final week of their trip on the island, a popular tourist destination famous for its white-sand beaches and spice plantations, when the attack happened in Stone Town, the island's capital, on Wednesday evening.

Two men on a moped drove past the pair and the pillion passenger threw the liquid at them before speeding off.

Speaking for the first time since the attack, Katie's mother Nicky Gee said: "I've spoken to my daughter – her whole face and body is burnt.

"It was an acid attack on two English girls. They were dressed appropriately – they just attacked two young girls.

"We can't get them home yet. If the Royal family were there I'm sure they would get them out."

Asked if she had any idea when her daughter would be flown home, Mrs Gee said: "Between the Foreign Office and the insurers I have no idea."

Mrs Gee was speaking from the home of the Trup family in Hampstead, north London, a short distance from her own home in East Finchley.

A family friend said: "We want the insurance company to stop counting the beans and just get them home – that's our main priority.

"Everyone's priority is to get these girls back. They haven't left the hospital yet.

"We are talking to the Foreign Office, trying to get the insurance company to move things along. We want them back so they can be treated in the UK."

Kirstie's father Marc Trup, a dentist and company director, said: "We're trying to get them back as soon as possible. We're trying to organise a medivac flight."

The teenagers both suffered injuries to their faces, chests and hands, and were transferred to a hospital on the Tanzanian mainland.

Jakaya Kikwete, Tanzania's president, visited them at the Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam and promised that their attackers would be found.

"It's a shameful attack that tarnishes the image of our country, I order security agents to speed up the investigations and arrest the suspects," he said.

Tanzanian police want to question an Islamist preacher to question him about the acid attack, a senior officer said.

Sheikh Issa Ponda Issa heads the Council of the Islamic Organisation, a radical Muslim outfit based in Dar es Salaam, and was found guilty in May of breaking and entering linked to riots that followed reports of a Christian boy desecrating a copy of the Koran. He was given a 12 month suspended sentence.

Sheikh Issa spent a week in Zanzibar at the beginning of August, preaching in mosques and advocating his supporters to demonstrate "like in Egypt" in order to secure the release of 10 imprisoned members of an Islamic separatist group.

"He has been going around telling youth that they must stage endless demonstrations and protests like in Egypt to disrupt the government and show that he has power," an officer based in Stone Town said on the condition he was not named.

"He has not directly said the tourists should be targeted, but scaring them can be a way for his supporters to think they are achieving his aims, even more effectively than street actions, because tourist dollars are what keeps the government working.

"We want to talk to him, but his whereabouts are not known. We are looking for him. We do not think he ordered this thing, but we think he can tell us useful information."

There had been talk in Zanzibar that a group called Uamsho, or The Awakening in Swahili, were planning public protests or some kind of action to coincide with the end of Ramadan on Thursday.

Uamsho wants Zanzibar to split from the Tanzanian mainland, which it blames for bringing alcohol and Western ways to the islands. Sheikh Pondo visited imprisoned Uamsho members in jail while he was in Zanzibar, the officer confirmed.

"There has been speculation that they would do something during Ramadan or Eid to show that they were still a force to be reckoned with," one European hotel manager who attends regular security briefings with the island's police said.

"To be honest, we expected maybe a street march or something. Throwing acid at two tourists seems way off from their usual methods."

A doctor at the hospital who was part of the team that attended to the teenagers said that their injuries were "mild".

"We suspect that whatever the liquid was, it was not true acid, it may have been diluted," he said. "They have burns on their hands from wiping the liquid off. They have minor injuries on their chests and their necks. Considering it could have been very bad, what they have is quite mild.

"They were shocked, of course, but they are not feeling very bad."

The teenagers were on a trip organised by Kent-based i-to-i Travel. A spokesman for the company said: "They were flown to Dar es Salaam in mainland Tanzania for medical treatment and have now been released from hospital.

"All our efforts remain focused on ensuring they are supported whilst assisting them and their relatives with the arrangements for their return home.

"i-to-i Travel is working with the authorities in their investigations and continue to liaise closely with the British consulate in Tanzania.

"The motive for the incident is as yet not known and we will await the report from the local authorities in Zanzibar before any comment can be made.

"The female clients had been volunteer teachers on Zanzibar and were in the final week of their trip.

"The safety of our customers is of paramount importance to us and our own investigation will be launched as soon as it is possible to do so and more information will be released as it becomes available."

"Police in
Zanzibar have launched a manhunt, and we ask for public assistance in identifying the attackers," said Mkadam Khamis, the island's deputy police commissioner.

The attack on the women came at the end of the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan, and as people began to celebrate the Eid holiday.

"The motive for the attack on the volunteers aged 18 years, has not been established. Investigations are on until we apprehend the criminals," Mr Khamis said.

Zanzibar has long been a favoured holiday destination for foreign tourists, and there have rarely been tensions between the majority Muslim population and holidaymakers relaxing in bikinis on beaches or drinking in bars.

Recently however there have been a series of attacks targeting representatives of different religions.

These include an acid attack on a Muslim cleric in November, and the shooting dead of a Catholic priest in February. Another priest was shot and wounded in December.

The semi-autonomous Zanzibar archipelago lies 20 miles off the Tanzanian mainland.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said: "We are aware of an incident and are providing consular assistance."

The Foreign Office travel advice for Tanzania warns that although most visits to the country are trouble-free, "violent and armed crime is increasing".

The advice on its website says: "Mugging, bag snatching (especially from passing cars) and robbery have increased throughout the country."

It adds: "In Zanzibar incidents have taken place in Stone Town and on popular tourist beaches."
