As of early 2026, Kenya is experiencing a concerning surge in homicide cases and violent crime, with preliminary reports for 2026 already showing an upward trend compared to 2025.

Media reports highlight a surge in killings across the country, prompting urgent public concern.

A total of 398 Kenyans lost their lives in violent incidents between January 1, 2026, and January 30, 2026, representing an 11% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

While some reports indicate localized improvements, data presented to parliament indicated that in certain periods between September 2025 and February 2026, homicide cases still fell within a high-risk category, despite reported declines in other crime categories

The National Crime Research Center projected a moderate upward trend in violent crimes for 2026, with forecasted incidents potentially ranging from 34,686 to 44,533, depending on factors like police efficiency and economic conditions.

The rise in violent deaths is largely attributed to domestic tension, socioeconomic challenges, and increased rates of femicide, creating a "national crisis" according to activists and local researchers.

Reports suggest a persistent issue with mob justice, with hundreds of cases reported since 2025, particularly in areas like Nairobi and Kiambu.
