The number of engaged taxpayers in Kenya has surged to an all-time high, indicating a consistent expansion of the country's tax base over the past seven years.

As per the most recent statistics from the Kenya Revenue Authority, there are now an estimated 9.87 million active taxpayers anticipated for the 2024-25 fiscal year.

This marks a remarkable increase from the 5.1 million recorded during the 2018-19 financial year, effectively almost doubling the number of individuals and organisations that are actively contributing to the national budget within a relatively brief period.

The upward trend has remained steady, demonstrating annual increases that emphasise a widening sense of fiscal accountability.

Beginning with the baseline of 2018-19, the numbers increased to 5.77 million in 2019-20 and escalated to 6.547 million by 2020-21.

This upward trend carried into the 2021-22 cycle, where the figure rose to 7.225 million, and then surged to 8.153 million in 2022-23.

The latest completed cycle of 2023-24 experienced a significant jump to 9.669 million, marking a new peak.

This growth signifies a changing economic landscape where more individuals are being brought into the formal tax system.

The rise from 5.1 million to nearly 10 million active contributors indicates stricter revenue collection practices and enhanced compliance across different sectors.

As the 2024-25 estimates hold steady at 9.87 million, the data underscores a transformative era for Kenya's domestic resource mobilisation, shifting the weight of national funding across a much wider demographic than ever before.
