After a 39 year wait, Taifa Stars played their opening group match against Senegal. The result, even for the most ardent Taifa Stars fan was expected, a two nil loss and totally dominated was never a surprise. The disparity between the squads in terms of experience and gulf in class is obvious but to simply give that as a reason for the loss misses the point. It is paramount to understand the shorting comings in detail and this is where I personally feel Tanzanian football falls short. Lots of blah blah blah and very little if any tactical understanding of the game. Here I shall explain the tactical side of the match and pinpoint the key tactical features that contributed to Star’s demise.
It is very hard to analyze this game without mentioning the selection of Fei Toto. His place in the starting lineup was questionable taking into consideration the caliber of opposition we were facing. Needless to say, he simply could not handle a match of such magnitude on such a big stage, to no fault of his own. Some things simply come with experience. That said; let’s now look at the game itself.
Ball progression.
A key feature of modern day football is the ability to play out from the back even under intense pressure. Ball playing centre backs and goalkeepers comfortable with the ball at their feet is no longer a luxury but rather a necessity. Goal kicks from Aishi towards Samata or Msuva didn’t stick simply because neither is excellent aerially and also the two centre backs have height advantage and won the majority of the balls. In the second half there was an incidence where the ball was hit to Bocco who managed to control it and set up a shot for Msuva. This should be the approach in the next match. The moments Stars managed to get the ball to Samata and it stuck was when the ball was played to his feet.
In situations whereby the centre backs got the ball and had time on the ball, their forward passes were intercepted. Being able to circulate the ball well at the back will eventually release a free centre back and from there on it’s about how you transfer this free player further up the pitch. Options are for the centre back to dribble the ball forward in anticipation that one of the opposition midfielders will be drawn out thus leaving a free play who you can then access, (not as easy as written here because it involves understanding cover shadows and so forth…not covered here) but also be able to play ball over the defense for attackers to run onto. (The second approach has been a common feature in this tournament, most notably the match between Guine and Madagascar.) These two explain why Stars failed to get the ball into the attacking third and failure to do so means you cannot create chances.
On the other hand, Senegal understand the tactical movements needed to progress the ball to the attacking third. Coulibally, who is one of the best central defenders in the world played and flourished under Sarri at Napoli. The ability to play out from the back was a key feature in Sarri’s tactics at Napoli and Coulibally has assimilated those teachings. When free on the ball he was able to hit diagonals out to the flanks, play balls into Keita Balde coming into the half space or simply run the ball out. This leads into the next point……

Overloads/ numerical equality down the flanks.
With the centre backs free and able to circulate the ball, it’s how they managed to transfer this free player in defense further up the field. There were two different approaches on the two flanks. To fully understand this you need to understand WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF PLAYER MOVEMENT DURING THE GAME. Movement is determined by advantage, and the advantage you seek is:
  • Quantitative superiority, creating situations of numerical superiority or equality around the ball
  • Qualitative superiority i.e putting your best player against the opponent’s weak player.
On Senegal’s left flank ball progression involved the movement of Keita Balde drifting inwards (vacating) to receive the ball in what is known as the half space from Coulibally. The movement was complemented by the left fullback’s forward run which meant that Kessy had a tactical dilemma, to follow Keita or track the run of the left back. Follow the winger’s run meant ball was played over to the fullback, track the fullback meant Keita received the ball free and could thus dribble forward and thus draw out a defender. It happened once and Mwantika wa fortunate not to get a yellow card having fouled Keita. Another interesting ploy between Keita and the left back was a vertical pass to Keita who bounced it back into the path of the underlapping fullback who dribbled forward. In short, they manipulated both Himid and Kessy at will with the movement guaranteeing that any situation that developed they already had an answer to.
Down the right flank the situation was different. Sarr(no. 18) hugged the touch line and the diagonal balls to him from the back or switch of play to get the ball to him meant that he found himself against Gadiel 1 v 1 and using his speed and power to go past the defender. Again, credit has to go the right fullback for quickly getting forward to create 2 v 2 or 2 v 1 situations. Furthermore, Diate made runs into the half space and enabled Senegal to manipulate these situations with relative ease. The corner won that led to the second goal also came about because of the overloads. It is this collective understanding of the tactical movements that lies at the heart of ball possession; the ability to manipulate the opponent ensuring that the opponent always has to react to what you do. This explains why Taifa Stars committed so many fouls.
Negative transition:
Top level football players don’t have much time and space as in lower leagues. Movements are quicker decision making has to be quicker and of course you need to be able to still want the ball even under such situations. Star’s player found themselves under immediate pressure and it was more evident during Senegal’s negative transition. Within the first 10- 15 minutes Msuva, Mudathir and Fei Toto were pressed heavily when Senegal lost the ball and had it not been for Niang’s poor finishing, Stars would have been 2-0 down as a result of the opponents counter pressing.

So in a nut shell, Stars failed to effectively progress the ball, whether through goal kicks or playing out from the back using positional attacks. The knock-on effect is that they did not create situations of numerical equality or superiority. It has to be mentioned though that in the second half Yondani did play some diagonal balls out wide but the receiving player either chose the wrong option or didn’t have the confidence to take on the fullback. Their opponents progressed the ball well and thus enabled them to create favorable situations which meant they created chances. Combine that with their impressive counter pressing, it easy to see why Stars failed to have any meaningful possession of the ball.
Algeria is another opponent that will present similar problems. Game against Kenya showed that their centre backs especially No. 4 is very adept at running the ball out from defense. The right full back, forward thinking and marauds forward very well means again Gadiel will be faced with overloads down his flank. Talking about midfield, energetic and industrious players able to track the runs of Feghouli will be pivotal.
Technical competence takes years to master and is a lifelong practice for a player and something which Amunike can have little influence on but he is now tasked with coming up with a master plan that will at least solve the tactical conundrums presented in this match and that to me, will be a fair judgment of his coaching abilities.
