A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer was found dead in a suspected suicide at the Kenya Navy Manda Base on Friday evening, police have confirmed.
According to a report filed at Hindi Police Station, the incident was reported by Sergeant George Omusungu of the Military Police.
At around 5:40 p.m., Corporal Cornelius Ndereba, 30, attached to the Army Signal Battalion and on duty at the OAB Headquarters within the base, was discovered lying dead inside the radio room.
Preliminary investigations indicate that a gunshot was heard at approximately 3:30 p.m.
An AK-47 rifle and one spent cartridge were recovered at the scene.
A search of the deceased’s personal effects led to the recovery of a Defence Savings and Credit Cooperative Society member account variation form.
Investigators also learned from colleagues that the officer had reportedly been experiencing domestic challenges involving his former spouse, also a Kenya Navy officer, concerning the medical care of their sick child.
Investigations are ongoing.
