Nineteen Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) generals, including Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, Lt. Gen. Charles Otema Awany and Maj. Gen. Abel Kandiho, have officially retired from active military service at State House Entebbe on August 20, 2026.
The retirement exercise covers 19 General Officers, 229 Senior Officers, 205 Junior Officers and 1,364 other personnel. Seven of the senior generals retiring are:
• Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala: Joined the army in 1979 and served as UPDF Land Forces Commander, Chief of Defence Forces and Inspector General of Police before moving into Cabinet.
•Lt. Gen. Charles Otema Awany: Served as Chief of Logistics and Engineering before commanding the UPDF Reserve Force.
• Lt. Gen. Charles Angina: Served as Deputy Chief of Defence Forces before joining Operation Wealth Creation and later serving as Uganda’s Deputy Ambassador to Egypt.
•Maj. Gen. Abel Kandiho: A prominent military intelligence officer who headed the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI).
•Maj. Gen. Geofrey Katsigazi Tumusiime: Transitioned from the UPDF to the Uganda Police Force, where he served as Deputy Inspector General of Police.
•Maj. Gen. Apollo Kasiita-Gowa: Served in senior UPDF leadership roles during his military career.
• Maj. Gen. Leopold Eric Kyanda: Held senior command and administrative positions within the UPDF.
The retirement marks a major generational transition within Uganda’s military and security leadership, with the officers leaving behind decades of service across military command, intelligence, policing and public administration.
