The appointment, announced on Monday, August 3, takes immediate effect. Alongside his new assignment, Brig. Gen. Nyakikuru has also been granted the acting rank of Major General.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued by the acting Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) spokesperson, Col. Chris Magezi .

Maj. Gen. David Mugisha, whom Nyakikuru replaces, will be attending a National Defence College (NDC) course abroad, a programme designed to equip senior military officers with advanced strategic leadership and national security training.

The Special Forces Command is an elite unit of the UPDF tasked with protecting the President and First Family, securing key national installations, and undertaking specialised military operations.

Brig. Gen. Nyakikuru is expected to immediately assume command of the unit as Maj. Gen. Mugisha prepares to begin his studies overseas. The appointment comes as the UPDF continues routine leadership deployments and professional military development for its senior officers.
