Police have arrested 11 commuter taxi drivers for dangerous loading during a night operation at the Maya checkpoint along the Masaka Highway.
According to Traffic Police spokesperson SP Michael Kananura, the drivers were intercepted through an intelligence led operation after allegedly travelling at night to avoid police checkpoints.
The suspects are being held and will be arraigned in court to face charges under the Traffic and Road Safety Act.
Police said dangerous loading remains one of the most common traffic offences, especially at night when some drivers believe enforcement is limited.
Authorities warned that carrying more passengers than a vehicle is licensed for or overloading it makes it unstable, increasing the risk of tyre bursts, loss of control and fatal crashes.
Police said the nationwide crackdown on dangerous loading has begun and warned that motorists found violating the law will be arrested and prosecuted. They added that intelligence led operations will continue during both day and night to improve road safety.
