Home favourite fastest in qualifying as Schumi misses out on Q3

Last updated: 24th July 2010

Vettel: Pipped Alonso
Sebastian Vettel claimed arguably the best pole position of his career when he topped Fernando Alonso in qualifying for the German GP.
Alonso was looking good to put an end to Red Bull's latest run of P1s in qualifying, setting the pace in both the first and second segment. But it wasn't to be.
Vettel, who was second in the early segments, clocked a 1:13.791 to edge ahead of the Spaniard, and although the double former world champion did everything he could to take the coveted grid slot, he fell 0.002s short.
"It would be interesting to see just how much it is, two thousandths of a second," beamed Vettel, who was clinching his third pole in a row.
"It was very close all session. Fernando was really strong, and the Ferraris were very competitive.
"We knew it would be a difficult session, and two thousandths of a second is not what you are looking for, so we had to push very hard and it was very exciting.
"I'm extremely happy because it's my first time on pole at home, but the challenge will come tomorrow when it will be a tough fight against the red cars."
Felipe Massa will line up in third place in Ferrari's best qualifying performance of the season, while Mark Webber is P4 ahead of the two McLarens with Jenson Button surprisingly in front of Lewis Hamilton.
Robert Kubica, Rubens Barrichello, Nico Rosberg and Nico Hulkenberg completed the top ten, the latter actually pushing Michael Schumacher out of the fight for pole position in Q2.
Meanwhile, qualifying ran a few minutes longer than usual as it was stopped in Q1 when Tonio Liuzzi suffered a huge impact on the pit straight.
The Force India driver put his wheels onto the astroturf through the final corner and was flung across the track, crashing heavily into the barriers.
However, it is team-mate Adrian Sutil who was handed a five-place grid penalty after the team was forced to change his gearbox following a driveshaft failure in morning practice.
He managed 14th place during afternoon qualifying and will therefore start Sunday's race from 19th place on the grid.

Ferrari are fined $100,000 after race stewards decide the team breached sporting regulations by appearing to implement team orders, but the result of the German Grand Prix stands

Fernando Alonso controversially led a Ferrari one-two at the German Grand Prix after Felipe Massa appeared to be given orders to let his team-mate past.

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel was third at his home Grand Prix at Hockenheim, 5.1 seconds adrift of the Spaniard.

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button never threatened the leaders but Hamilton's fourth-place finish means he still leads the drivers standings.

Mark Webber was one place off Button in sixth for Red Bull after engine issues.

The result was a first one-two for Ferrari since the first race of the season in Bahrain, a race Alonso won, but the Spaniard's victory in Germany was soured by the coded team orders given with 18 laps to go.

Ferrari, however, insisted the incident was "a driver decision" and said no instructions were given to their drivers.

Massa, who trailed his team-mate by 31 points prior to the race, was told by his Ferrari race engineer, Rob Smedley, over team radio: "Alonso is faster than you. Can you confirm you understand?" - to which he responded by letting Alonso through on Turn Six moments later.

Following the move, Smedley added: "Good lad. Just stick with it now, sorry."

hawa F1A hawana msimamo....wana sheria inasema team order haziruhusiwi kuamua race, waache driver wa-compete,wanatunyima raha mashabiki......ingekuwa MCLAREN wangewashughulikia lkn FERRARI hawawezi kuwagusa,i hope they prove me wrong...........

Pamoja na ushidni madereva wote wa Ferari hawakuwa na raha wakati wa kunyunyiziana mvinyo. Alosno mwenyewe sura yake anaoeneka hana tabasabu hasa la kuchukua Ushindi kiushindani. Massa naye amekosa raha anahisi kaporwa ushindi. Ni utata mtupu.

Lakini itakuwa ngumu kuwa[a penalty Ferari sababu jamaa walimpa Massa ujumbe kisanii. wao wanasema coded message. "Fillipe Alonso is fatser than you confirm if u understand the message" Baada ya mzunguko 1ja massa kamuacha jamaa apite.

Kwa iyo hata wakihojiwa watasema walikuwa wanampa status kuwa aliyeko nyuma ana kasi zaidi hawakumaanisha amuachie. japo wote tunajua hiyo ilikuwa ni order ampishe jamaa.

Ferrari fined, referred to WMSC over team order allegations

Following their controversial one-two result at the German Grand Prix, Ferrari have been fined US$100,000 by the FIA after race stewards deemed they had breached sporting regulations. The case has also been referred to the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC).

Ferrari driver Felipe Massa, who had been leading the Hockenheim race, moved aside to allow team mate Fernando Alonso past on Lap 49. A few moments before, Massa's race engineer Rob Smedley had told the Brazilian "Fernando is faster than you. Can you confirm you understood that message?"

Although Ferrari insisted this did not constitute a team order, the stewards decided they contravened Article 39.1 of the sporting regulations, which states that "team orders which interfere with a race result are prohibited", and Article 151 (c) of the International Sporting Code, which outlaws "any fraudulent conduct or any act prejudicial to the interests of any competition or to the interests of motor sport generally". The decision will also be forwarded to the WMSC for its consideration, meaning Ferrari could in theory face further sanction.

Maintaining Ferrari's innocence, team principal Stefano Domenicali stated: "As for the stewards' decision, given after the race, in the interests of the sport, we have decided not to go through a procedure of appealing against it, confident that the World Council will know how to evaluate the overall facts correctly."

For his part, Massa suggested he and not the team had made the decision to surrender the lead to Alonso: "In my opinion this was not a case of team orders: my engineer kept me constantly informed on what was going on behind me, especially when I was struggling a bit on the hard tyres: so I decided to do the best thing for the team, and a one-two finish is the best possible result, isn't it?"
