Works Minister Summoned Over Rising Road Accidents, Abandoned Projects

Parliament's Committee on Physical Infrastructure has summoned the Minister of Works and Transport to explain the rising number of road accidents and the growing number of abandoned road projects across the country.

The minister is expected to appear before the committee on Tuesday to account for the state of the road sector, where more than 20 road projects have reportedly been abandoned by contractors.

Lawmakers also want answers on what the ministry is doing to improve road safety following an increase in fatal road crashes.

Among the most recent ones was a fatal collision between a train and a school bus that left one dead and several injured.

Eyewitnesses attributed the cause of the crash to a lack of proper signage at the railway crossing point.

The summons comes less than a month after the minister assumed office.
