The Kampala-Entebbe Expressway is one of the best-engineered roads in Uganda — wide lanes, clear markings, streetlights, and proper signage. Yet accidents keep happening, and yesterday's tragedy is a painful reminder.

At least one person died and several others were injured after multiple crashes on the Kajjansi-Busega section. The fatal case involved a pedestrian struck near a sharp bend — on a road where walking or crossing is strictly prohibited.

So why does a well-built, well-organised road keep recording crashes?

Overspeeding. The smooth surface and open lanes tempt drivers to push speed limits, especially on straight stretches and near bends where visibility drops suddenly.

Ignoring road signs. Warning signs, speed limits, and pedestrian-prohibition notices exist for a reason — yet many drivers treat them as optional.

Reckless driving in bad weather. Rain reduces visibility and road grip, but some drivers maintain the same high speeds regardless of conditions.

Pedestrians crossing a no-walk zone. Despite repeated warnings from expressway management, some residents still cut through the safety fence or cross at unauthorised points — turning a controlled-access highway into a danger zone for both walkers and drivers.

Drunk driving. Impaired judgment and slow reaction time remain a major, often underreported, factor in expressway crashes.

A good road is not a safe road on its own — it only works when it's respected. Infrastructure can guide behavior, but it cannot force discipline.

What do you think should be done to end this cycle — stricter enforcement, harsher penalties, better community sensitization, or something else?
