As things seem, our Excellency is determined to build a state of the Art International Airport in Bagamoyo, his hometown, suprizingly none of our so called technical experts at the TCAA is daring to tell him of the prospect of that Aiport to be void and null. The project that is anticipated to source funds from the Eurobond of $500 million that the country is eyeing by the mid of next year, will be a misallocation of resources if none of us will stand FIRM and OPPOSE his Excellency from executing his dreams that serves us NO RELIEF IF NOR MERCY on our economy that NEEDS BADLY credible INFRASTRUCTURE!
Probably we should ask ourselves (tax payers) whether, a town of 30,000 inhabitants and 70 km from Dar es salaam needs an Airport of that magnitude. As far as i know, the town has no social and economic activities that can shoulder the burden that comes along with such a massive investment! Moreover, the proximity of Bagamoyo to Dar es salaam makes it impossible for those huge international jets to include the airport in the Dar route since it is uneconomical (as taking off and landing requires a lot of fuel combustion for that distance to make any sense). This leads me to ask one thing, has there been a feasibility study on that project? a CBA? if yes who did that? Are or President and minister incharged adviced properly?
I know people inhere are going to respond negatively towards my suggestion but we need to know when we put up money somewhere, it has to be gained back through tax and revenues collected rom using the respective facility invested! Tanzania is so big and there are areas that are completely isolated, with a lot of untapped potentials like the Western regions of Tanzania e.g. a city like Mwanza and a town like Kigoma could make more sense economically for this respective project! why? Mwanza has a huge population aside Dar es salaam (> 1 million inhabitants), the city is industrious with massive mining activities e.g. gold, nickel, cobalt, germstones e.t.c plus touristic activities i.e. Lake Victoria and Serengeti are in the proximity without forgetting the fishery activities! Whereas Kigoma has a population of over 150,000 people, also has a growing palm oil agro-industry that its potentials remain untapped, plus the tourism activities at Ujiji, Gombe and Lake Tanganyika not to forget fishery activities! Moreover and most important Kigoma is a gateway to the western DRC, Rwanda and Burundi!
Do our technical advicers see this? then, why not advicing our excellencies the priorities right know! Then if they are adviced and give a deaf ear on the advices given, why should they look for alternatives? if ther agenda is to serve their hometown; Bagamoyo right now needs an airstrip, needs a state of the Art university/college that will as well serve Dar es salaam, good hospital and hotels BUT NOT an international airport! Moreover I would accept a good harbour/port there but AGAIN not before an expansion of that of Dar es salaam, Mtwara and Tanga! Probably we should learn a lesson from our Neighbor's past mistake, Kenya under Moi built Eldoret International Airport in Eldoret (262 km away from Nairobi) that until now has failed to attract International Airlines i.e. it serves undercapacity! A wastage of resources that we are about to embrace here in Tanzania! Pls people outthere don't allow our politicians waste our resources!
If Kikwete is there to serve the interests of the people of Tanzania then he should hear this call and NOT waste our RESOURCES cause the Eurobond money about to be splashed on this project won't be recovered to pay back the loan in time! That is a "A WHITE ELEPHANT" project and none of us is above the law when it comes to a project that will be a burden to this country! Pls use our RESOURCES wisely and try to emulate ACCOUNTABILITY and RESPONSIVENESS to our pleas ......
NOTE: Lets discuss facts here and NOT religions OR tribes! Our future is on our SHOULDERS than need SMART and SHARP minds...
