The Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has sparked fresh political debate after publicly praising senior government minister Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth and endorsing him as a preferred candidate for the Speakership of the 2026–2031 Parliament under the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) , this has come days after The CDF withdrew His endorsement from the Candidature of the Hon: Annette Anita Among who is also the current Speaker of parliament on allegations of being Corrupt.
However the question now would be Who is this preferred Candidate that the League and the first Son is fronting?
Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth is a Ugandan lawyer, politician, and senior government official currently serving as Minister of State for Defence (General Duties) and Member of Parliament for West Budama South. He is widely recognized within Uganda’s ruling establishment and has recently been mentioned in political discussions involving the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) and the ongoing Speaker of Parliament succession Dynamics.
Hon.oboth Oboth
Born on 13 April 1971 in Tororo District, Eastern Uganda, Oboth-Oboth rose from a humble background to become a lawyer and seasoned legislator. He studied law at Makerere University and later obtained a postgraduate diploma from the Law Development Centre, before building a career in both public service and active politics.
Before entering elective politics, he worked as a State Attorney in the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs. He later joined Parliament in 2011, where he quickly established himself as a key parliamentary figure, serving in powerful committees such as Legal and Parliamentary Affairs.
Within the current political discourse, Oboth-Oboth has been linked by the CDF and some political analysts and insiders to the PLU bloc as a potential “consensus-type” candidate in succession discussions surrounding the Speaker’s office. This comes amid reports that PLU leadership shifted its earlier support away from Speaker Anita Annet Among and Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, reopening competition for top parliamentary leadership positions.
He has often been described as a loyal NRM cadre with strong legal expertise and institutional experience qualities that have made him a recurring name in conversations about parliamentary leadership transitions.
